AAN: Golden Globes Predictions w/ Fassy, Loki and Owen

I know the Golden Globes aren't for another week, but I have to get my predictions down as I am leaving soon  and I won't be around for the Globes. And it is always nice to predict, especially considering the races are so tight this year it'll be a surprise if I'm right about any of them! Here's how my predictions work:

Remember Happy Fassy, Lowkey Loki and Overwhelmed Owen? Well they factor in to my predictions.
Happy Fassy = Who I'd like to win. Doesn't necessarily mean that they will win, though. Basically, if I got to vote, they'd be the winners.
Lowkey Loki = My official prediction for who will win.
Overwhelmed Owen = The longshot. If this person/film won, then it would be quite the surprise.

Got that locked down? Good. Let's proceed...

Best Motion Picture - Drama:
The Descendants / The Help / Hugo / The Ides of March / Moneyball / War Horse

I guess The Help is my Happy Fassy since it appears to be the only film from this line-up that I've actually seen. I was thinking about putting War Horse there since it is about a horse, I cried a bucket of tears while reading the book, it is a Steven Spielberg movie and Jeremy Irvine is a cutie, but I thought that might be a bit dishonest. I'm seeing it as soon as I get back, since I'm missing opening day so I can be in another country (I'll pretend to be happy about this...). I'm actually not entirely sure about what will win this one, as for me I think the race is between The Descendants, Hugo and Moneyball. The Descendants should probably be taking the award, though I wouldn't take my word for it. The Ides of March looks like a longshot, considering that the Golden Globes seem to be the only awards circuit that is falling head over heels for it.

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
The Artist / Bridesmaids / 50/50 / Midnight in Paris / My Week with Marilyn

I've only seen two from this category: Midnight in Paris and Bridesmaids. And I think you all know which one I like more. The Artist will definitely take this prize, as it will probably take Best Picture at the Oscars. My Week with Marilyn is obviously the longshot, considering it has had lukewarm reviews and I don't know how it even qualifies to be in this category (I thought it would be more of a drama?)

The rest of my predictions after the jump...

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
George Clooney in The Descendants / Leonardo DiCaprio in J. Edgar / Michael Fassbender in Shame / Ryan Gosling in The Ides of March / Brad Pitt in Moneyball

I feel a little guilty for choosing Michael Fassbender over Leonardo DiCaprio for the Happy Fassy, since Leo has always been my favourite actor and Fassy is my new actor obsession. But I'd just love to see Fassy get the award for a film like Shame. Still, Leo needs to win his Oscar. Just a shame that J. Edgar is apparently quite bad. The race is really between Brad Pitt and George Clooney, and I think that Pitt will come forth as the winner since he is somewhat overdue. Double-nominee Ryan Gosling will probably be left in the dust.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs / Viola Davis in The Help / Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo / Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady / Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk About Kevin

Yes, I have seen Viola Davis' work in The Help. Yes, there is a huge chance that she will win. But I'm going for Rooney Mara, despite the fact that I haven't seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and if I don't get to see it while I'm in Australia I won't be seeing it for months. However, I think if someone as young, and, well, inexperienced as her can take on a role like Lisbeth Salander (with huge expectations since Noomi Rapace was so good in the role) and come out the other side with hugely favourable reviews, she deserves a lot more recognition than she's been getting. Plus, this category is extremely old-fashioned. Anyway, I think this category is an even competition, since Viola has been a lock ever since The Help came out, Tilda Swinton has been winning a lot of critics awards, Glenn Close has been winning raves for her role even though her movie has been getting the opposite and Meryl Streep is...well, she's Meryl Streep. Rooney Mara will fall off the back of this train and Michelle Williams will take her spot at the Oscars.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Jean Dujardin in The Artist / Brendan Gleeson in The Guard / Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 50/50 / Ryan Gosling in Crazy, Stupid, Love. / Owen Wilson in Midnight in Paris

This line-up is one which I was quite happy with, considering how the HFPA have been known to screw this category up. Surprisingly, I've seen three of these performances (Brendan Gleeson, Ryan Gosling and Owen Wilson), but my Happy Fassy is going to Joseph Gordon-Levitt because, well, it is JGL, and I've heard great things about his performance. However, Jean Dujardin will undoubtedly take the gold considering he is a front-runner in the Oscar race for Best Actor. Again, double nominee Gos doesn't have a huge chance, mainly because while his performance is good, they don't yet give out Golden Globes for abs.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Jodie Foster in Carnage / Charlize Theron in Young Adult / Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids / Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn / Kate Winslet in Carnage

Since Michelle Williams is a lock for the Oscar nomination, it is pretty obvious that she is going to win this. Her only real competition is coming from Charlize Theron, even though her Young Adult campaign has been a little redundant. As the only performance I've actually seen, Kristen Wiig gets to be the Happy Fassy...but she is actually quite good in that movie. That leaves the two ladies from Carnage - both of them are longshots, which is weird considering that I thought this movie would be a front-runner in awards season. But it is virtually nowhere to be seen.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Kenneth Branagh in My Week with Marilyn / Albert Brooks in Drive / Jonah Hill in Moneyball / Viggo Mortensen in A Dangerous Method / Christopher Plummer in Beginners

Can I just reiterate how weak this field is? Why aren't these people picking up on Alan Rickman's excellent work in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 or all of the supporting actors in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy? Hmmmm. But when we all know that Christopher Plummer is going to win, and if he doesn't, I will personally start a riot. Viggo Mortensen is my longshot because has anyone actually watched A Dangerous Method? It has been absent from like, everything. I was thinking about putting Jonah Hill as the longshot, but this guy seems all set to get the Oscar nomination. Wow.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Bérénice Bejo in The Artist / Jessica Chastain in The Help / Janet McTeer in Albert Nobbs / Octavia Spencer in The Help / Shailene Woodley in The Descendants

If I'm being honest, I'm not entirely sure of who will win this award. Each of the actresses have perfectly good chances. I'm going with Octavia Spencer because she's been a lock for quite sometime, and I suspect there will be a bit of The Help domination. My darling Jessica Chastain stands quite a big chance, though, considering the year she has had, and that this nomination really isn't just for The Help. Still, the rest of the field provide some good competition, particularly Shailene Woodley, who has been getting a lot of love from the critics circles.

Best Director - Motion Picture
Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris / George Clooney for The Ides of March / Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist / Alexander Payne for The Descendants / Martin Scorsese for Hugo

I think that the director race will turn out much like last year. While David Fincher won this particular award last year for The Social Network, it was Tom Hooper's year to shine. I think that this year, it will be a similar break-out director like Michel Hazanvicius who gets all of the awards. Martin Scorsese does stand a chance since his use of 3D is apparently quite good. Who knows? This could be anyone's award, really.

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture
The Artist / The Descendants / The Ides of March / Midnight in Paris / Moneyball

Again, this award could go to anyone. I'm liking Moneyball's chances, since it is written by my two favourite screenwriters Steve Zallian and Aaron Sorkin, but I'm not sold that Moneyball will dominate the Golden Globes. Still, my heart is with Midnight in Paris, and I think its mega nostalgia hit will be popular with the HFPA.

Best Animated Feature
The Adventures of Tintin / Arthur Christmas / Cars 2 / Puss in Boots / Rango

Why is it that the only category I'm ever well-schooled in during awards season is the animated feature category? Ah, I know, because animated films always come out on time here. I can't see anything but The Adventures of Tintin winning, although Rango stands a chance since it has won so many critics awards. Something that doesn't stand a chance? Cars 2. Just because it is Pixar doesn't mean it automatically deserves a nomination.

Here are the other nominations. The nomination that is underlined is what I predict to win...but I don't know enough about them to do what I did with the others.

Best Original Song
'Lay Your Head Down' - Albert Nobbs / 'Hello Hello' - Gnomeo & Juliet / 'The Living Proof' - The Help / 'The Keeper' - Machine Gun Preacher / 'Masterpiece' - W.E.

Best Original Score
Ludovic Bource - The Artist / Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo / Howard Shore - Hugo / John Williams - War Horse / Abel Korzeniowski - W.E.

Best Foreign Language Film
The Flowers of War / In the Land of Blood and Honey / The Kid with a Bike / A Separation / The Skin I Live In

Who do you think will be the big winners at the Golden Globes?

  1. But you haven't seen Drive! Do not rule out Albert Brooks in the Supporting Actor category- he was brilliant, definitely my pic of the year. Plummer was adorable, but Brooks was just uncanny and awesome.
I think Best Actor wise it'll be a Pitt vs Clooney thing. Somehow Globes and Shame in the same sentence makes no sense.

  2. The reason Meryl may yet win is not just because she's Meryl, but because she's getting wide acclaim for her performance. Her reviews for this film are among the best she's gotten in her career. Yet, she may not win as she's been honored so often at the Globes and recently at that. Not the same scenario for the Oscars. I think she's the frontrunner there.

  3. I love your predictions and I totally agree with them, although I won't be that surprised if Berenice Bejo won the Supporting Actress Awards. Oh man, I hope you are right about Fassy, he needs to win, that will be a great surprise and it will increase his chances for Oscars.

  5. Such a cool way to look at the globes! I should do my predictions soon(ish). I really, really want 'Lay Your Head Down' to win best original song, but few seem to pay attention to this category. I think it's just beautiful. I think it's down to Hugo or Moneyball for Best Drama, and either Midnight in Paris or The Artist for Comedy/Musical. Tintin will take it from Rango. Defs Scorsese's year for Best Director though...

Knowing me, all my guesses will be wrong.

  7. I've seen 4 out of 5 and I do think A Separation has this one locked down unless Miss Angie bribes enough voters in time.

  8. I pretty much agree with everything, except Spencer - I think Chastain is definetly winning this one. I always loved Globes because they usually award one of my favorite actors - RDJ 2 years ago, for example. so I'm hoping Fassy gets some love, it's bad enough Michael Shannon is not even nominated :(

  9. Nikhat - Well hopefully Drive will be playing on the plane so I can see for myself :)
No, Shame and Globes don't go in the same sentence...but things can change.

Anonymous - That's true, she's got a lot of acclaim. She will definitely be a huge threat to Viola Davis.

Aziza - I wouldn't be that surprised if any of the supporting actresses win...but you know me, I'm with Chastain until the end. And yes - he better get nominated, or else!

Scott - Haha, they are very beautiful teeth :D

Ruth - I reckon Scorsese has a good chance, but something about him winning an award for a kids film doesn't sound right to me. I'll probably change my mind once I see Hugo.
And you never know, your predicitions sound pretty on the money.

Jacob - And I can promise you that there is a 75% chance that it will :)

Bonjour Tristesse - Has anyone actually seen her film though? I think A Separation will win though, by a landslide.

Sati - Well I hope that Chastain does win, that will make my year :)
