Tuesday Links and Other Stuff #18

What I'm watching tonight...

Despite the fact that the holidays are just around the corner and usually this is high time that the studios bring out lots of movies on DVD, I just have Real Steel to watch tonight. Too much homework (grrrrrrrrr) is preventing me from watching another one tonight, which slightly annoys me.

Podcast plug...
Another week, another podcast...though this will be the last of my podcast appearances for a little while, since work is getting in the way of EVERYTHING. This time I make an appearance on the LAMBcast (even though I'm pretty sure I missed half of it thanks to Skype difficulties) chatting about movies we love but can't recommend to others. I'm not a big recommender (after being told several times by customers that I don't know what I'm talking about), so this was a perfect topic.

Links...
Yeah, I'm not a fan of Chloe Moretz being cast as Carrie White in the remake of Carrie (I'm just not a fan of the whole thing full stop, I love the original). Sati puts up a case for eight actresses who would be better...I'm all for Mia Wasikowska!

Tyler has unleashed his top ten of 2011...I should really get a hurry on, but I haven't seen all I have to!

One film I'm actually kinda excited to see (despite my genuine distaste for horrors) is Cabin in the Woods. Front Room Cinema has a review up and it is looking good!

Anna puts together some interesting thoughts on one of the most underrated films ever, Sunshine.

Andy had the pleasure of watching Wrath of the Titans, and somehow, he did not like it. I'm only seeing it for Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, but I think I'd rather see them in Schindler's List a thousand times in a row instead.

Hardly anyone saw Mirror Mirror this weekend (that I know of), but Candice has some nice thoughts about it. Even though I haven't seen the film, I like what she's saying here.

Diana reminds me of a great movie that I wouldn't mind seeing again, There will be Blood. So much awesomeness.

To make me even more excited for The Avengers, someone has opened up a Twitter account for Loki. I love you, Loki.

Final word...
What's a movie that you love but can't recommend to others?

  1. Well, I cannot recommended Star Trek films to anyone, because most of my friends still have the 'lol, nerd' reaction :P Dot and the Kangaroo is probably another...The Tree of Life, uhhmmmm.....I also really quite enjoy, despite it's fault, the Australian film adaptation of Macbeth. No one else I know likes it, so I don't recommended. Plus, I know it has bad points, they just don't bother me :)

    1. Haha, my friends have the 'lol, nerd' reaction when I say that I like Star Trek. And yeah, I wouldn't recommend The Tree of Life. My staff pick at work was more like a warning!

  2. Thanks for the linkage.

I can't believe customers tell you you don't know what you're talking about. You probably know better than them and you're only 16. I could never work at a DVD store if I had to take that shit all the time.

A movie I love but can't recommend to others? Well, there's Lars von Trier's THE IDIOTS, which I think is fantastic but others just find pointless and offensive. I also have stopped trying to recommend SATANTANGO because people are so ignorant; once they hear that it's seven hours they refuse to even give it the tiniest of chances. Another one is JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES, a rare French movie from 1975 about a housewife whose meticulous routine causes her to suffer a mental breakdown. The film is so incredibly subtle in the breakdown that most people don't even realize she's having a breakdown until the last 30 minutes, and the film is 200 minutes long. But it does deliver a hell of a punch in the final five minutes, though few people make it that far. I love all those movies and occasionally I do recommend them but often it's pointless because I rarely have people telling me they loved them, and the ones that do say that saw the film before me.

    1. Working at a DVD store when you love movies is not all it is cracked up to be. No one takes me seriously. EVER. Just because I don't think movies like Just Go with It or Zookeeper are the best movies ever made.

Wait, Satantango is seven hours? I had it in my head that it was four hours...strange. I might give it a go if it ever comes back into print here. I know how you feel, though. That's why I don't recommend movies.

  3. Thanks for the LINK Stevee. I know you are going to love CABIN. It throws everything you every thought of HORORR slasher genre out of the window, stomps on it for a bit, re assembles and starts again.

It is amazing and bat shit crazy! I want to see it again NOW!

  4. I actually won't recommend films to anyone at all, unless I have a really good idea of the sort of thing they're into. The most I'll usually say, if I'm asked, is what I thought of a film myself and that they may or may not agree.

  5. Movies I love but can't recommend to other people? Can't say I've come to that scenario. Many of the movies I recommend people like.

    Thanks for the link.

(On a different note, when are you going to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy?)

    1. NEVERRRRRR! I kid - whenever it comes out on DVD (which by my calculations will either be May or June). I was hoping to see it these holidays but it only JUST stopped playing at the cinemas, grrrrrr.

  6. Thanks for the link! The movie I love but can't recommend? I honestly don't know. Perhaps the new version of Solaris - it's very slow paced and lots of people don't like it, but I adore this film.

  8. Thanks for the link!
I have the problem with recommending movies, too! I always try to do that with my friends, but they turn out to not like my choices. Case in point, I raved about Drive to my male collegues, they saw it and they were like "neah, nothing special"- and it's weird, since both of them like to watch movies and usually have good taste! I took some of them to see Hunger Games, same reaction! I think I learned my lesson :)
