New Rating System is Here!

The last of the changes on the blog for the time being is my brand spanking new rating system. Unlike the previous ones, the movies that inspired them weren't all from one year - I've spread them out a little. There are also eight ratings instead of five, which I'll explain further. So, without any further ado, let me introduce them to you...

One of my favourite quotes from last year was "nyaaaaaaaaaaaaah!", given to us courtesy of Ralph Fiennes and his Voldemort. I frequently use it in intense moments of rage (well, I would if I ever had them). And bad movies sometimes inspire rage. That's why I chose Voldemort to be my poster boy for any movies that I rate either 1 or 2 out of 10. Because you can't really get much worse than that.

There are so many great quotes from Fight Club that I had to use one, even if most of them didn't fit well with being a rating anyway. So I chose Tyler Durden's words that would change the world (quite literally) to describe the emotions I get when I watch a movie on 3 or 4 basis. Sometimes I do feel like saying this to someone when I watch a bad movie, because I can't believe I wasted my time on that.

I'm actually quite surprised about the fact that The Social Network didn't feature in last year's ratings considering how into that movie I was back then. But one of my favourite quotes from the movie fits in perfectly here to go with a 5/10 movie. Basically, if you go on Rotten Tomatoes, a 50% movie is rotten and a 60% movie is fresh, so I needed a rating to distinguish the two. So this one is for the movies that I liked enough, but not enough to give it a fresh rating.

When I watched and reviewed Hanna, someone said to me that a 'I just missed your heart' rating would have been perfect for it. It is pretty much perfect for a 6/10 rating, which means that it was good but just missed great...or my heart.

Ugh, that photo is so bad quality...but there are like, no individual photos of Gretchen Wieners online. Anyway, this is for a movie that I'd give a 7/10 to. Basically, it was really cool, but just not on 8/10 level. Like the word fetch, this movie being really something just wasn't going to happen.

I thought it would be kinda funny to have the king of bad movies as my 8/10 rating. I could have picked any crappy line out of The Room, but I thought this one fit perfectly. Mainly because the movie was just a great story, and I was probably left smiling like good old Tommy Wiseau up there. I just don't look as creepy. I hope.

My favourite line ever gets to be my 9/10 rating. I always felt like I should have a 9/10 rating, because too often I watched movies that were almost really amazing and I'd have to give them the 'I was perfect' rating, when they weren't actually perfect. Like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. So they were indeed a bingo, but just not on par with my next rating...

Okay, so this was an opportunity to have a cute dog like Cosmo from Beginners hang around the site a lot more. But his quote is perfect for a 10/10 rating. I think I said to someone after I watched Midnight in Paris that if I could marry a movie, it would be that one. Which must mean that it was pretty darn special.

Anyway, what do you think of the new ratings? Are they easy to understand, good choices, whatever? Sorry that I'm asking for a lot of feedback, but it won't be for much longer...

  1. Aww. Lovely system really. Especially love The Social Network, Mean Girls, Hanna, Landa and Voldie. And Arthur is a very cute dog eve though in real life I'll be terrified of him.

    1. Haha, small dogs like him aren't that bad. It's the big dogs we have here in NZ that work on farms that you should be worried about!

    2. Don't say that! I want to come to NZ some day (mostly for the LoTR place).

    3. As far as I know, they don't have big farm dogs there. That is the land of the racehorses, but you wouldn't see many of them actually at Hobbiton (I hope).

  2. Ahh! This is such an awesome system! So many great quotes heh heh. Man, Christoph Waltz is the best. Ever. I can't wait to see Carnage just because of him.

  3. Like Nikhat said, love Voldemort, Social Network, Hanna, Fight Club and Inglorious Basterds, the other are fine, too, just not...as amazing as these ones! Great rating system anyway, with the photos. If I were in your shoes, I would try to link 2 or 3 marks together- like 1,2,3,maybe 4, then 5,6,7, then 8,9, then 10, it's easier to follow and understand, but that's just a suggestion. I really do like your system, but you can improve it!

    1. There's a problem with that, which I hoped to quash with this new rating system. You see: I have OCD. Everything has to be perfect for me otherwise I may as well die. And that last rating system with five in them really pissed me off to no end. I linked a few ratings together, but then I realised that films were getting better ratings than they should have (see what I said in 9). A 9 is not the same as a 10. I wasn't too worried about the more terrible films, so I linked 1-2, and 3-4 together, but the others were just *too* different. So here I'm kinda being like 'screw what everyone else can understand, I need something that perfectly fits'. And that's what I've tried to do here. In saying that, I might get rid of 7 even though that is an absolutely crucial mark. IDK, I might just flag it all. But other sites have around 9-ish ratings so I'm running under a bit here.

Sorry for the long reply, but there's my reasoning behind it all :)

  4. Stevee I think it's a great idea. I would however also mention the numbers to go along with the lines just so that everyone reading is sure what you mean by it. All the best

  6. I love them. Such a great idea for a rating system! I have always been jealous... I officially hate you for having the idea first!

    1. Haha, I didn't come up with the idea of ratings like this, just the ratings!

  9. ah love mark's, it fits so perfectly, I like this one! Though I miss Eames' line, it was probably one of my favorites from the other rating system :D

  11. LOVE it!! So inventive, Stevee... Voldemort's NYAAAAAAAAAAH! as the worst gives me a giggle. And Christoph's expression as he said that line in 'Basterds' is just precious!

    1. Haha, I love the way that Christoph says that line. One of the most deserved Oscars went to him :)

  12. I like it although I'm not really fond of rating systems these days. I find them to be confusing and quite unnecessary as I believe that it's the review alone where people should figure out if it should be seen or not. I've gone by that stance after my experience in reviewing The Tree of Life.

    1. I'm going against rating systems slightly, mainly because of The Tree of Life. Alas, for the sake of my IMDb rankings, I still use ratings systems. But I can definitely see where you're coming from.

  14. lol, back in the day of Blog Cabins, Dylan not only had that Fight Club picture, but the same quote to go with it for almost essentially the same rating. But I like the new ratings!

  17. I love it! But I agree with Castor, maybe you should take one out. The best ones, because they're just spot on, are Voldemort and The Social Network.
