What's Happening Where I Am: Cinema and DVD releases here, 22/09/11

Cinema releases

Jane Eyre - After two weekends of 'advanced screenings' and week's delay, the latest adaption of Charlotte Brontë's classic novel starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael 'Shark' Fassbender has finally hit NZ screens properly. I have a confession to make, though. Back in 2008, I read Wuthering Heights for the first time, and since then it has always been my favourite book (hey, I don't read a lot, so this was an achievement). So I thought that just for fun I might buy Jane Eyre along with my copy of Wuthering Heights since they're by a pair of siblings. This was back in 2009. I still haven't read Jane Eyre. I've tried and tried and tried, believe me. I've picked it up so many times and I just never seem to get past the 200 page mark. It's not that it's a bad book...it's just that I'm a bad reader. But I will get there sometime soon!

Chalet Girl - So, up until last week, I'd never heard of this movie. It just seemed to pop up out of nowhere. But hey, it has Felicity Jones (who I can't wait to see in Like Crazy) and Tamsin Egerton (possibly the prettiest girl ever), so I'm kinda in. However, it looks pretty formulaic and the poster is pretty lame, but you know...I'll give it a go when it's on DVD.

The Devil's Rock - This is a NZ horror, based around World War II and the Nazi's apparent occult plot to unleash demonic forces so they can win the war. On the news last night, the director said that this was actually a happening thing. It looks like it could be fun, but then again, I'm so weary when it comes to NZ films. Which is weird because if I get my way and I become a director, I'll probably be making NZ films. Then again, on the realistic side, I'll never become a director. So I should stop being so weary around these homegrown films!

The Lion King - I don't know why I find it funny that a movie that was made 17 years ago is at the top of the US box office at the moment. All I can say is thank God they re-released this. Now it's out of Disney's vault, Blockbuster Dannevirke can finally get their hands on a copy that they should have had in the first place. Bloody hell, that place disappoints me sometimes.

Little White Lies - Marion Cotillard. YES.

DVD releases

Hesher - I watched this movie last night. Oh good lord it was brilliant. And then in the credits I was reminded that this was co-written by the guy who made Animal Kingdom. Then it got ten times cooler. How is this rotten on Rotten Tomatoes?!

Mars Needs Moms - Is it bad that I forgot this movie even existed? And is it bad that I didn't even bother to give it a try?

Take Me Home Tonight - When I looked at the poster for this movie, I thought this would be a fun and flashy comedy that just reeks the 80s. But unfortunately, when I watched it, it was a pretty toned down comedy that really only had the soundtrack making it like the 80s. It just really worried me that I knew most of those songs off by heart (thanks, Mum).

Your Highness - I watched this because, well, I'd had enough of studying and I had no better way to spend my Tuesday movie night. My goodness, can't any of these people hold a British accent?! Even my British accent is better! And yeah, it was pretty atrocious. Just shows that a film filled with cool people like Portman, Franco and Deschanel isn't particularly a good one.

So, what are your thoughts on these films? Seen Mars Needs Moms? Can you do a British accent? Read Jane Eyre?

  1. The only thing I found remotely interesting on this page is Hesher, but it'll probably be months before I see it, considering how lazy I am when it comes to new releases.

I'm usually interested in new NZ movies, but I can't be bothered with THE DEVIL'S ROCK, whatever the fuck that is. A few months ago here in my home city (Invers FTW!) they were shooting a movie starring Hamish Blake from Hamish and Andy, and Bret off Flight of the Conchords. The movie's called TWO LITTLE BOYS, and it's a comedy. It's getting released down here I think, early in next year, but I just read that in a newspaper article months ago so I dunno if that's still happening here, or when it's happening. But it's definitely gonna happen. Which is nice.

  2. OMG. I also started to read Jane Eyre a couple of times but I think I didn't get to 200 page as well! And I loved Wuthering Heights. In my opinion, it's so much better than Jane Eyre.

I was also surprised to see Hesher rotten at RT. Those critics don't know what they want. Apparently.

I saw Your Highness, but it was a dubbed version, so I can't say about British accents. Overall, this film is not that bad as everybody says. I don't understand their complaints that it wasn't The Princess Bride. The trailer made it clear enough what kind of humor it will feature. So why compare it to that classic?

  3. I've been wanting to see Hesher for so long now, jealous!

Little White Lies is great. It got a lot of hate for being overlong, but I loved it.

  4. My Mom watched Little White Lies and told me it was fantastic. Sadly, I missed the opportunity to watch it, but I'll catch it on DVD.

  5. Little White Lies is a pretty decent French ensemble film with an excellent cast and cool soundtrack.

Hesher has been on my list for awhile now but I haven't had the chance to view it yet.

  6. Jane Eyre had a very limited run here ...I mean like about 6 screenings and it was done and dusted! I had to see Shark Night several days ago because JE had gone!
Mars Needs Moms had the trailers played no end and then didn't screen!!
Funny thing with you not liking Kiwi films. I was exactly the same at your age with NZ music. I thought it crap way back then but when I listen to those same bands now I realise they were actually damn good. I think over the years to come your tastes and views will change and Kiwi films will look good.

  7. I really want to see Hersher :) It's not out at my video store yet, though. I haven't read Jane Eyre, but I watched the movie. I thought the acting was great, especially by Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, and the movie was good.

  8. What a disappointment Your Highness was despite its decent cast. Deschanel is someone I usually think of as carefully choosing her scripts based on quality not pay packet but I've seen her in an alarmingly increasing number of bad films lately.

  9. Tyler - There was something on Flicks last week about that TWO LITTLE BOYS thing...I think they're webisodes? I don't know, I didn't look into it. But you're lucky that you get people filming in your hometown!

Lesya - I agree! I'll try give Jane Eyre another go, but I kinda wanna read Wuthering Heights again!
Why would you even compare it to The Princess Bride? They have almost nothing in common! Geez, people these days.

Cherokee - I really wanna see Little White Lies. I've heard that complaint too...but who cares?

Mette - I'll be sure to check it out on DVD also!

Bonjour Tristesse - It sounds pretty awesome!

Brent - Wow. We just had two lots of advances screenings weekends and now it is playing properly...but I don't think that will last very long, somehow!
I used to dislike NZ music too. I don't really mind NZ films, but they definitely aren't my favourite!

Meghan - I really would like to see Jane Eyre...I love Wasikowska and Fassbender!

Dan - Gosh, I know right?! It's a shame about Deschanel...she didn't really get the career boost that Joseph Gordon-Levitt got from 500 Days of Summer.

  10. "Why would you even compare it to The Princess Bride?"

No no no, *I* didn't compare it to The Princess Bride. Quite on the contrary.

  11. No...I mean why would *anyone* compare it to The Princess Bride. I didn't mean you at all!

  12. I just misunderstood you. Didn't want you think that it was my idea, haha :)

  13. Having recently seen Felicity Jones in Cemetery Junction I'm now looking forward to seeing Chalet Girl. I think she's a talented actress with potential.

  14. Lesya - Haha, I knew it wasn't your idea!

Dan - I've been in love with her since Cemetery Junction! I do really want to see Chalet Girl and Like Crazy - she's gonna be a hit sometime soon!
