What's Happening Where I Am: Cinema and DVD releases here, 02/06/11

Cinema Releases

X-Men: First Class -
Dearest mother,
You know how last year I was all psyched about going to see Inception that I paid Dad $50 to take me and a friend over? Well yes, it shall be a similar case with X-Men: First Class. Okay, maybe I won't be paying you $50 because I'm poor after I bought Black Swan with my entire week's wages (and you will not be watching that movie either, it's mine), but I will dig into my savings so you can take me to go and see this movie on Queen's Birthday. Because you know how much I want to see this movie. I rambled on about it when I first saw the trailer. I keep going on about how one day if I don't get to marry Andrew Garfield, Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgard or Jeremy Renner, I'll be marrying Nicholas Hoult. And you know how much I love Jennifer Lawrence.
Please mother, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease?
Love from your darling daughter. Who will clean the house thoroughly over the weekend if you take me.

Barney's Version - I must admit, even though I don't know a lot about this movie, I really would like to see it. Mainly because I have this obsessive girl crush on Rosamund Pike. I don't know why, but I just think she's insanely beautiful and seems really lovely. Apparently this movie goes through a lot of time or something, which is why it was nominated for Best Makeup at the Oscars. Paul Giamatti also won Best Comedic Actor at the Golden Globes (not that the twice nominated Johnny Depp was much competition). I guess the cast looks pretty cool, and the movie looks quality.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules - Wait, this was the movie that completely wiped out Sucker Punch on it's opening weekend? Wow. I know that Sucker Punch is supposed to be really awful and all, but I didn't think this was popular material. Especially seeing as it's really juvenile (I guess there are a lot of young people in the world) and the first one wasn't even that great. Oh well, I could probably laugh at this if I was 9 years younger.

DVD Releases

Black Swan - This is the only release on DVD this week, which pisses me off. Because, being new, people will go straight to this movie, expecting pretty ballet and happy happy people. But the reality is, I literally do not want anyone watching this movie. Mainly because I freaking love it so much and a lot of people will just go "WTF?! She's so crazy. This is duuuuuuuuuuuuumb." Which is unfair, but that's just the way society is these days. Anyway, upon the second watch I loved this movie even more, mainly because I noticed all of the effects Aronofsky achieved with the mirrors. Mirrors are awesome. Natalie Portman is awesome. Fuck it, this movie is probably one of the best of 2010, no doubt about it.

Got any thoughts on these movies? Got any ideas of how I can con my mum into taking me to the movies?

  1. Haha, I love your "letter" to mother!

As for Black Swan, I know you wouldn't recommend it to anyone, while I would (to some people who'd understand it). You're so right about the reactions of the majority of viewers. I saw many hating comments like "Yuk, it's a film about a schizophrenic who needed sex." They just don't get it.

  2. Nicholas Hoult is somewhere down the line in my 'To Marry' list too...you can marry him after Andrew marries me :P
But...apparently Hoult is dating Lawrence! And yes I'm the kind of freak who gets excited about things like these... but they look soo good together. Another reason why I MUST watch X-Men.

I love Black Swan more upon subsequent viewings too. I know people who had the exact opposite reactions... it was more of the psuedo-intellectual snob reaction. Those can be just as bad.

  3. Lesya - Ha, I doubt she'll ever read it, but I think I have a good chance of going to see X-Men this weekend.
Yeah, those are the comments which I have seen. Which is a real shame, because it's an amazing movie, but so be it.

Nikhat - Haha, well Andrew is single now!
Wow, Hoult and Lawrence?! That makes me so excited! They're like, two of my most favourite young actors!
Ugh, I hate snob reactions. I have a friend who does that with every single movie, even though Burlesque is her favourite. Golly. But Black Swan does get better and better, I think I'm obsessed with it :O
