AAN: Predicting the Golden Globes w/ Silva, David and Joe

The Golden Globes are happening in nine days, but since I'll be in Japan at the time, I am going to do my predictions now. I'll be using Sparkling Silva, 'Overjoyed' David and Loopy Looper to help me predict the awards. Here's how they work:

Sparkling Silva - Who I want to win...even though I don't really have an opinion because I've seen 0.078% of the nominees.
'Overjoyed' David - Who I'm predicting to actually win.
Loopy Looper - The long-shot.

Best Motion Picture - Drama: Argo / Django Unchained / Life of Pi / Lincoln / Zero Dark Thirty
While this is race between Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty, I just can't see Zero Dark Thirty taking out this one. I'm leaving that for the DGA and PGA's to get that to the Oscars. So, I'm fairly sure Lincoln will win, even though I wouldn't dismiss Argo. Life of Pi and Django Unchained seem like long-shots for such a close race, but I'd pick Django Unchained as the one I want to win because that would be cool.

Best Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel / Les Miserables / Moonrise Kingdom / Salmon Fishing in the Yemen / Silver Linings Playbook
Silver Linings Playbook and Les Miserables will go head to head here, but given the mixed reaction to Les Miserables, I can see the former winning. However, Moonrise Kingdom could end up being the spoiler (hey I've seen that one, meaning that the only films I haven't seen in this category are the front-runners - I guess I'm kinda winning). I'd love to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel win, and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen will continue being the place-filler it is and come out on the bottom.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama: Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln / Richard Gere in Arbitrage / John Hawkes in The Sessions / Joaquin Phoenix in The Master / Denzel Washington in Flight
I literally couldn't care less about this category, because something in me does not want to see Daniel Day-Lewis win another 500 awards. It would be nice to see Denzel Washington win, but then again, he isn't exactly new to this winning thing...I just want him to make some better movies.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama: Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty / Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone / Helen Mirren in Hitchcock / Naomi Watts in The Impossible / Rachel Weisz in The Deep Blue Sea
I'm 95% sure that there's no way that anyone can beat Jessica Chastain here, although Naomi Watts might give it a good crack.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy: Jack Black in Bernie / Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook / Ewan McGregor in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen / Bill Murray in Hyde Park in Hudson
As with the Best Musical/Comedy category, this is again a contest between Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook. While I've always loved Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman deserves this (and I really want him to beat DDL too). My heart aches for Jack Black - I rewatched Bernie last night and he is so unbelievably good in that movie that I really want him to get an Oscar nomination. Which won't happen, sadly.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy: Emily Blunt in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen / Judi Dench in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel / Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook / Maggie Smith in Quartet / Meryl Streep in Hope Springs
There is literally no way that Jennifer Lawrence can lose this award. No way. But it would be cool to see Maggie Smith get it because she's a flawless lady (although I'm sure she'll win for Downton Abbey).

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture: Alan Arkin in Argo / Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained / Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master / Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln / Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained
This race is so strongly contended that there's no clear winner. While Tommy Lee Jones is probably the current front runner, I won't have him beat Leonardo DiCaprio again (you remember 1993? ugh). And it would just make my decade to see Leo winning awards.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture: Amy Adams in The Master / Sally Field in Lincoln / Anne Hathaway in Les Miserables / Helen Hunt in The Sessions / Nicole Kidman in The Paperboy
This category is so weak that they should just nominate Anne Hathaway by herself because no one will ever beat her. Not even you, Sally Field.

Best Director - Motion Picture: Ben Affleck - Argo / Kathryn Bigelow - Zero Dark Thirty / Ang Lee - Life of Pi / Steven Spielberg - Lincoln / Quentin Tarantino - Django Unchained
I just wanna see Kathryn Bigelow win all of the awards - but it will be interesting to see if the Golden Globes split it up if my predictions are right. Though it would be nice for Quentin Tarantino to win, because he's retiring and all.

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture: Argo / Django Unchained / Lincoln / Silver Linings Playbook / Zero Dark Thirty
Yeah...I can see Zero Dark Thirty winning this one...but Lincoln could possibly take it if the awards go gaga for that movie.

Best Original Song - Motion Picture: "For You" - Act of Valor / "Safe and Sound" - The Hunger Games / "Suddenly" - Les Miserables / "Skyfall" - Skyfall / "Not Running Anymore" - Stand Up Guys
I just want to marry the song "Skyfall", it is brilliant. I mean, Les Miserables might win this one, but c'mon...it's Adele.

Best Original Score - Motion Picture: Anna Karenina / Argo / Cloud Atlas / Life of Pi / Lincoln
I don't even know about this category but Lincoln will probably win it.

Best Animated Film: Brave / Frankenweenie / Hotel Transylvania / Rise of the Guardians / Wreck-It Ralph
I am a little doubtful that Brave will win this award, but I'm behind my girl Princess Merida right throughout awards season.

Best Foreign Language Film: Amour / Intouchables / Kon-Tiki / A Royal Affair / Rust and Bone
Amour will win this award but I saw and liked A Royal Affair so let's go that movie! My campaign will certainly be redundant...

And there you have it! Who do you think will win these awards?

  1. Great post. I liked A Royal Affair too. But I want the Intouchables to win. However, Amour is a shoo in.

I still think that Les Miserable is unbeatable in Musical category. Even though it has rave reviews, it will still get enough votes, especially after impressive box office.

And Bigelow would be too overawarded if she wins it. Affleck vs Spielberg is more fair, I guess.

    1. I really want to see The Intouchables!

Yeah, I think Les Mis has a very good chance.

There is a possibility that Bigelow will roll into this overawarded, especially as she won 58629369824 critics awards. I'd like to see Spielberg win again.

  4. This post looks like a lot of editing work so I feel obliged to comment. I want Looper to get something.. I mean, I liked the soundtrack of Looper.. but I doubt it will get any big awards but maybe a nomination here and there. One can hope. Moonrise Kingdom might take something but I haven't seen SLP yet so.. who knows!
