Sometimes I Take Photos...Part II

Over a month ago I shared some of the photos I've taken during the year. As I roll into a month that will be filled with lots of movies that I want to review, I wanted to calm things down before the storm. So we'll just take a little detour to the world through my amateur lens. Unlike the last ones, these ones have been a little touched up on the computer, but only coz I wanted to achieve that look. But there's no let's-put-something-in-here-that-makes-no-sense-at-all business or let's-saturate-the-crap-outta-this-photo going on. Because that's not my deal at all. I like things that are real.

Hi, my name is Stevee Taylor and I like to make things ten times darker than they should be because I love playing with the exposure. I guess that should speak wonders about me, but I'm not a very dark person. I just think silhouettes have a better effect.

But hey, this one looks pretty mean all dark. It was the only way I was gonna get that red to show up as red instead of pink.

And yes this was taken in the middle of the day but you wouldn't be able to get that photo any other way!

New Zealand beaches are very very pretty. I have about 600 photos from this trip but there's only a select few that I'm completely happy with.

Well I guess we've had enough landscape photos so how about this one of little Indy that I took today?

These two photos are the beginning to my photography folio that I'll be doing until the end of the school year. It is focussed on the backs of buildings in town - I've always found them so fascinating because no-one cares about what's at the back like they do about what's at the front. As you can plainly see. Hopefully the folio comes along just the way I want it to.

Anyway, what do you think of these photos?

  1. Really pretty photos. I don't know which I prefer: the sunset ones or the last two...

    1. Thanks! The last two turned out really well, surprisingly.

  2. The last photo - two thumbs up and a big toe up as well. Amazing. I'm gonna save it for my inspiration folder to put it up on my inspiration wall, if you give me your permission.

    1. Oh course you can! And I must ask your permission to make my own inspiration wall - that's an awesome idea!

  3. I like those last two especially. There's something about that sort of run-down urban setting that always makes for potentially interesting photography.

    And dogs.

    1. I know, right? 'Urban decay' - as I've been told it's called - is so cool.

      And dogs are cool.

  4. They are great pictures. I do think that us film-bloggers, deep down, desperataely want to be more creative when its easier to criticise and analyse...

    1. I totally agree. I've always been a creative little girl, but it is a whole lot easier to look at other people's creativity.

  5. Love those! The last two are especially gorgeous!

  6. Wow, these looks still from a Terrence Malick film. That's of course a very good thing. But that last one looks like it's straight out of a sleazy film noir. Love it.

    1. They kinda do, don't they! I think Days of Heaven had a bit of an effect on me.

  8. These are great! I see what you mean when you said beauty can be anywhere, you just have to have the eye for it.

    1. Thanks! And yup, saying that totally gave me the inspiration for my folio.

    4. What so what I said gave you the inspiration?

    5. When I said to you that you can find beauty in anything - like council flats.

  10. Nice pics Stevee! Clearly, New Zealand is a very dark place ;)

  11. Ooh, I especially like the last one - it's got a very gritty feel to it. Could be a noir film or something!

  12. Stevee, these photos are incredible, my favorite is definitely the third one from the top, it looks like something out of Days of Heaven.

I'm a huge fan of jacking up exposure. Silhouettes can be so effective when used properly. And you're definitely onto something with those last few stills, can't wait to see what comes out of that folio.

Sorry if you've said before, but what do you shoot with? What body and what kind of lenses?

Also, funny story: my best friend got married Saturday, so I was taking a few pictures throughout the weekend, and about an hour after he was married, the sun started to set, so the professional photographer snapped a few pics of him and his wife, their faces clearly visible. I messed with the exposure and shot them in silhouette. Looks kinda badass. I put it up on Twitter yesterday if you want to see.

Post more of your pics, I really like them!

    1. Thanks! I think Days of Heaven had a profound effect on the way I was taking photos.

Silhouettes are awesome! I saw that photo, it was definitely badass!

I shoot with a Nikon D3100 and the lens that came with it. Unfortunately the camera isn't my own - it was given to me to borrow for the year while I do my photography course. Hopefully I can save up enough to get myself a decent DSLR camera by the end of the year!
