Lame Trailer Clichés: Pop Songs for Rom-Coms

One of the things that I dislike most about my job is the sound on the trailer disc. Sometimes, it'll be really quiet. Other times, I'll be half way through serving a customer and then the TV will suddenly burst out with some catchy but totally annoying pop song. More often than not, I'll look up and that annoying pop song will be accompanying a trailer for a rom-com. And then I'll get the song stuck in my head. So I don't know, I guess these trailers are doing their jobs:

And the queen of them all - we have the song telling us what the movie is!

This is how you put a catchy song in a trailer...you make Ryan Gosling sing it:

What do you think? Are catchy but annoying pop songs effective or defective? (I'm swaying more towards the defective side. Just remember that I have had to listen to these at least 40 times a month.)

  1. Blue Valentine is pretty much the furthest thing from a romcom as possible. But yes, Ryan Gosling singing <3 That trailer has to be one of my most favourite ever. Another thing, Ryan Gosling shirtless in a trailer. Or or, in an elevator, kissing Carey Mulligan and then bashing someone's brains out while wearing a scorpion jacket. Basically, Ryan Gosling in a trailer <3 <3

One thing I hate more than popsongs in romcoms' trailers is the loud obnoxious music in every other trailer.

    1. Haha yes it is, which is why it is a win. Ryan Gosling being in every trailer would benefit movies greatly.

      Gosh, I know.

  2. I love how you put the Blue Valentine trailer in the end to make the others seem crap. I hate pop music, even moreso when it is used inappropriately in a movie or trailer.

  3. Haven't seen any of those films, which seems like a win (except of course, for Blue Valentine.) God, I wanna see BV so bad! I know it'll leave me depressed, but still....

    1. Blue Valentine is great! Still haven't summoned up the courage to give it a second watch, though.

    1. I don't mind some of them. On the bright side, they're extremely easy to watch.

  5. Great list. I rarely pay attention to Rom-coms, but that Ryan Gosling is my favorite.

  6. Blue Valentine is the only trailer that works for a film that ended up being much better.

Everything else... BLECH!!!!! I kept groaning at every film as I scroll down the page.

    1. The Blue Valentine trailer is wonderful. And just avoid all of the other films, because they're all as bad as the trailers!

  7. Blue Valentine is not a rom-com, but I never get tired of watching and hearing Ryan Gosling sing, he's so charming!

    1. No, Blue Valentine isn't a rom com, but it is a good way of showing how to use a catchy song. Because Ryan Gosling is so nice when he sings!

  8. Rather pop song for any trailer! The first time is totally fine but when the same song is used 20 movies and trailers, it totally defeats the purpose.

    1. It does totally defeat the purpose. But they never learn...
