15 Favourite Redheads From the Movies...

Brave came out this week, and I have to say, Princess Merida's curly red hair was definitely the best thing I've seen in a long time. As most of you know, I'm a huge fan of red hair - in fact I once tried to dye my own hair red but then I realised that it was only ever meant to be boring brown. So why don't we celebrate the coolest red heads in cinema, whether they be actors/actresses or characters. And no, there'll be no Weasley family. They're awesome, but I feel like they're exempt because everyone knows how awesome they are anyway...

15. Victoria 'Vicky' Page from The Red Shoes.

The Red Shoes is based around some, well, shoes that are red. I guess it helps that the main character Vicky, played by Moira Shearer in her debut performance, has hair that practically matches the shoes that end up destroying her life. It also helps that this 1948 classic has one of the best uses of colour that I've ever seen. And no, I don't think that just because of Moira's beautifully fiery hair...or do I?

14. The natural, but part-time ginger McSexyPants - Michael Fassbender and Tom Hiddleston.

These guys were born and bred guys with hair that's red (ha, I should so be a rapper), but you wouldn't exactly think "oh, they're red heads!" That's because their red doesn't go as far as Merida's, yet if you look hard enough, it is there. Even though I hate Hiddles for his perfection and Fassy for his sharky smile, they had to sneak in a mention. Because they're both great advocates for ginger pride.

13. Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic.

From what I hear, Leo-Mania wasn't the only thing that came out of James Cameron's mega-squillions hit Titanic. Kate Winslet, sporting the most luxurious bright red curly hair (in fact, she is pretty much a real life Merida), one over the hearts of many, and sparked a bit of a trend. I mean sure, there was a love affair between the poor Jack and the rich Rose which was doomed thanks to that ship not being 'unsinkable', but I was having a love affair with Rose's hair. Any time Kate wants to go back to red, I'll be happy.

12. Blanche from Drive.

Christina Hendricks, aka the world's most beautiful woman, may not be in Drive for very long, but I found myself fascinated by her character. Since Hollywood is all for making prequels and stuff, I reckon they should explore the world of Blanche a little more. She was just a mysterious, seemingly damaged, quiet on the outside but fighting on the inside kind of woman. I unfortunately don't watch Mad Men (must get around to it), so this is about as much Hendricks as I get...but after her brief work in Drive, I'm definitely looking for more.

11. Becky Bloomwood from Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Okay, I'm going to put it out there - I freaking love Confessions of a Shopaholic, in all it's silly, fluffy, rom-com glory. Particularly because I'm a huge fan of Sophie Kinsella's series of books all about the lovable serial spender Becky. Isla Fisher is the perfect person to play her, since she's so bright and bubbly and has perfect comic timing. I can't wait to see what she does with Myrtle Wilson in The Great Gatsby. For now, I'm gonna hide at my house and watch Confessions of a Shopaholic for the millionth time. Because I'm one of only two people (the other being Mette) who love it to pieces.

10. Judy Garland.

Not unlike Moira in The Red Shoes, the colour of Judy Garland's hair went with the ruby slippers that became so iconic from The Wizard of Oz. Judy was born as a redhead, but went to being a brunette quite a few times in her career. However, the two films which I love her in the most - Oz and Meet Me in St Louis - feature her with beautiful auburn tresses. I imagine she caused quite a trend back in the 40s.

9. Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff from Iron Man 2 and The Avengers.

Scarlett Johansson is a natural blonde, but the role that she'll probably become most famous for, the ass-kicking Black Widow, has her sporting fiery locks to match her fiery skills. Being the only lady hero in The Avengers, she sure doesn't fade into the background with her mad skills or bright hair, and as we see in Iron Man 2, she isn't afraid to whip it back and forth. Plus, Scarlett's performance in The Avengers is easily her best, and possibly one of the best from a film filled with great takes on extra-skilled people.

8. Katharine Hepburn.

Once I read a biography on Katharine Hepburn and it commented on how she was just a freckly, pale, red-haired tomboy who didn't seem to be the kind that would become a movie star. She then went on to be probably the best actress in history. How could you not love her? Her sense of humour and fun approach to life has always inspired me. People always say that women with red hair have fiery personalities, and that couldn't be more true for Kate.

7. Daisy in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Cate Blanchett has donned red hair many times in her career, but my favourite flame-haired showing from her is as Daisy from David Fincher's underrated The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. She basically inspired me to become a redhead. Her hair is just so vibrant and long and straight and...everything I want in hair. It's so perfect.

6. Emily in The Devil Wears Prada.

Emily Blunt's performance as the straight-talking, ambitious yet bitchy Emily in The Devil Wears Prada is one of my favourite things ever. Not only does she get the coolest lines and the coolest clothes, but she has the coolest unnaturally red hair. And she totally rocks it. Emily Blunt is joining my list of one-time redheads who need to go back.

5. Julianne Moore.

Julianne is not only one of the best actresses ever, but she also wrote a children's book called 'The Freckle Faced Strawberry', basically about her experienced as a freckly redhead. That's totally awesome.

4. Brendan Gleeson.

I must admit, the guys haven't put up a strong showing in this list, so I thought it would be cool to stick Brendan Gleeson in here. Mainly because he's so awesome. I think that perhaps the best outing of the Irishman's red hair was in Braveheart as the bearded and dreadlocked Hamish. I may not have liked a lot about Braveheart, but Hamish sure was one of my favourite things about it. And Brendan Gleeson is gonna keep on being a strong advocate of ginger pride, for sure.

3. Olive Penderghast in Easy A.

Basically, I love Emma Stone. But I refrained from giving her own spot in here since she's not always flame haired (I actually prefer her as a redhead than I do as her natural hair colour blonde), and I feel like Olive, her character in Easy A, deserved to stand up here alone. Mainly because Olive is exactly the kind of person I wanna be - minus the red A and all. I mean, everyone I know wants to be Emma Stone in this movie.

2. Amy Adams.

It's hard to believe that the lovely Amy Adams was once a blonde - because now the world knows her as that lovable, bubbly redhead. I love Amy to death, and would probably kill to have her beautiful hair which started my fascination with that colour. She also evokes that old-Hollywood glamour which I love. If I was Amy Adams, I'd be very happy indeed.

1. Jessica Chastain.

A few of you are probably rolling your eyes and sarcastically thinking, "I didn't see that coming". Oh well, I can't help it if Jessica, the awesomest woman alive, is a natural redhead. I also can't help it if everyone that designs her photoshoots knows that her hair is so awesome, which makes them bring out that colour in the most beautiful ways. Oh...Jessica.

What do you think? Who are your favourite red heads in cinema?

  1. Nice list. Some great choices here. I would also nominate the character of Julie in Celine and Julie Go Boating. She has great red hair and that movie is pure awesome. Jacques Rivette had a penchant for redheads I believe. Or just attractive women in general. It certainly shows in films like Celine and Julie.

    1. Don't all men have a penchant for attractive women in general? :)

    2. I meant that Rivette really does love to put attractive women in his movies a lot. I mean look at La Belle Noiseuse... Emmanuelle Beart is naked for about an hour in that film.

    3. Haha, sounds interesting. Mind you, Emmanuelle Beart is extremely attractive.

  2. Redheads and a female Scottish accent. I think I'm going to like BRAVE.

On a related note, I'm a huge fan of Emma Stone and Kelly Macdonald.

I still haven't seen EASY A? Is it worth it even just for Stone?

    1. You probably will, then!

Easy A is really easy to watch, and that's because of Stone. Her performance is darn near Oscar worthy, in a perfect world.

Scarlett Johanson definitely deserves to be on this list! But I didn't even know Tom Hiddleston was ginger?! :O

Yup, Tom's a ginger. But only part-time. Most of the time he's either blonde or black like he was as Loki.

  5. What???? No Cady Heron??? You are so fired from The Plastics!! Cady should be on the list because she's a Mathlete and she knows Swedish. Everyone in Afrika knows Swedish.

  6. REDHEADS FOR THE WIN!!

In my list though, there will be Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge! and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and Annette Benning in Being Julia. These three roles, along with Winslet as Rose made me the redhead lover I am today, because I automatically assign red hair to movie-like drama and magic because of them.

I can't believe I forgot Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge! Her hair was amazing in that movie.

  7. I agree with asrap and Nikhat...Cady Heron and Satine should be on this list! Good choices otherwise.

  8. Were only real people allowed because I'm shocked that Ariel (i.e. of The Little Mermaid isn't on here). And, no, I do not jest.

On Kate being a redhead, it's not quite a gaffe but I chuckle each time I see THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and Dexter calls her "Red" because that was a nickname for the actual Kate, and because the film is in black and white you don't know that she actually IS a redhead.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Nope, she just didn't make the cut. I really need to go back and revisit The Little Mermaid!

      Haha, that's true. Quite funny.

  12. I'm not surprised by your #1 by the very least but it's still a great list, Stevee. I also love Emma Stone as a redhead (as do most people I think). I would have Kate Winslet from Titanic much higher though :)

    1. I love Emma Stone as a redhead too...hopefully she goes back to that hair colour (even though it must be annoying having to dye it all the time).

  13. I'm more partial to brunettes (especially those with piercing blue eyes), though I do applaud the inclusion of Fassy and Tom. And you added a few of my favorite red-haired leading ladies (Hepburn, Blanchett and Moore)! I'd add Rita Hayworth to my list.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rita Hayworth had lovely red hair. In fact, many of the stars from that period did, but the black-and-white obviously didn't pick up on it, which was sad!

  14. Oh this is freaking awesome, definetly my favorite out of all your posts! Such great choices here, I love redheads too and if you like Hendricks you should definetly go around to watching Mad Men, she is fantastic in it. Great call on Emily Blunt - I too like her work immensly and I actually dyed my hair the same color she had in the film, unfortunetly since I'm a natural brunette the dyong of the roots every month was getting tedious and I went back to my natural hair. Still it wasn't as bad as dying them blonde, every week or so my natural color was visible. I'd add Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic, her red hair are absolutely stunning there.

    1. Oooooh, thank you! I will get around to watching Mad Men, I've seen parts of it and it looks fantastic. Ah, I put blonde foils in my hair and the amount of regrowth that showed up after such a short time was shocking. Basically, I just stay with brunette because I can't be bothered dying it! Even though I should dye it brown again because the last dye has faded and I can see the pieces of red that I had shining through. Nicole Kidman has pretty amazing hair!

  15. Lucille Ball has several favorite movies for me:

DARK CORNER (1946) with Clifton Webb, William Bendix, in a "who's trying to kill me?" film.

LURED (1947) with George Sanders, Boris Karloff, Joseph Calleia, and Lucy's "the bait" for London's personal-ad's serial killer. Yeah - sort of a "SirCraigsList", or is that "YeOldeCraigsList"?

HER HUSBAND'S AFFAIRS (1947) His business affairs, that is, as in 'can't stay out of'. Franchot Tone in a surprisingly good performance in a surprisingly fun mystery.

MISS GRANT TAKES RICHMOND (1949) with mobster William Holden & Pals run up against his newly-hired good-girl secretary, Lucy.

THE FULLER BRUSH GIRL (1950) with Eddie Albert and a warehouse full of bananas.

DU BARRY WAS A LADY (1943) Red Skelton, Gene Kelly and technicolor.

And then THE BIG STREET (1942) with Henry Fonda discovering uber-bitch Lucy's crippled, soured mind may be worse than her recently-crippled body. This is the film that could drive Henry Fonda into playing bad-guy roles in spaghetti westerns - even if it took 26 years.

And finally, she had many small performances but good ones especially in ROOM SERVICE (1938 with the Marx Brothers), and WITHOUT LOVE (1945, Tracy & Hepburn).

Jean Harlow does a pre-code dye-job in RED-HEADED WOMAN (1932), and Charles Boyer makes his 2nd Hollywood film appearance. This isn't a favorite Harlow film for me - BOMBSHELL gets that vote, and LIBELED LADY is a close second because she commands several scenes with Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy and William Powell. But not as a red-head.

On the guy's team, Gene Evans in STEEL HELMET (1951) during the Korean War, and PARK ROW (1952) as an 1880's NYC editor, but he's best known for his heavies, like in ARMORED CAR ROBBERY (1950), a who's who of '40s and '50s heavies.

There's Kenneth Tobey, too, who filled American TV screens for their first 30 years after battling the occasional 5-legged octopus for Ray Harryhausen. "Someone had to!"

I'll give a plug to Ron Howard for his All-American red-headed kid as Opie Taylor, too. And when THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW switched to color, a lot of TVs switched off - we didn't need to see his hair-color to know THIS was a red-head.

  16. When I saw the title, I thought there must the Weasley family somewhere in that list, and there goes the intro... lol

I'm IN LOVE with this list. Rose DeWitt Bukater -- being a child, I wanted to look like her, so I'd put her even higher in the list. It totally rocks that you feature Emily Blunt's Emily here, she's one of my favorite characters, too. Kudos for not forgetting Blanchett's Daisy. And I'm so happy to see Hepburn, Fassbender, Moore, Chastain and my favorite Adams! They are awesome. Now I fully understand your obsession with redheads. If you have a fan club or something, I'd join now.

  17. Numbers 10 and 8 are most definitely my favorite. Of course, I never really thought of Garland as a red-head. But Katharine Hepburn, on the other hand was a red-head in EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD! One cigarette card from the 1930's showed just her hair and eyes and asked "Who is this red-haired tempestuous genius?" That's probably the best description of the Hepburn persona I've ever heard!
I am surprised to see you don't have Lucille Ball on the list. After Hepburn, she would be the first one I would have thought of. Great list, though!

For me my fav redheaded actress is Deborah Ann Woll. She has amazed me on True Blood, and i've been a fanboy of hers ever since episode 2 of its second season9The emotional range she showed in that was amazing). She was also really good in the Mothers day film remake.

Im still waiting for her to get a breakout role. And if that doesn't happen by the time i become a filmmaker i will just have to give her that role myself. I'm being completely serious here

  25. From time to time, we see so many horror movies come and go. Spooky, haunted houses, serial killers, slashers, maniacs, mentals, satanic and many others have been pictured in the movie. A lot of sub genres, a lot of remakes, a lot of variations, twist and all that can easily be found through the ages. Yeah, it's all true. But have we ever thought where it all came from? Or how does the horror genre change from time to time?
