What's Happening Where I Am: Cinema and DVD releases here, 01/12/11

Cinema Releases

Red Dog - You know the week's releases are pretty lame when the biggest release is an Australian film about a dog. But that's okay, since this movie was a huge hit across the ditch and it looks just peachy. However, I remember this exact day last year, Animal Kingdom was released on DVD. And that was a great Australian film. Good times. Have there been many other good Australian films out there? (I could watch Snowtown, but it looks too violent for my innocent eyes...can someone tell me what it's like?)

Jig - I saw this trailer before Beginners. Which made me think about how much I'd like to make documentaries. You'd get to meet some interesting people, and tell real stories. This one, which is about the Irish Jig championships or something like that, doesn't look that great. Mind you, I'm no expert on documentaries.

DVD Releases

Captain America: The First Avenger - I actually don't know whether this comes out today or not. It was scheduled to, but when I went into work today it wasn't there, without any explanation. Which sucks, because I was kinda looking forward to watching it again. I love Hayley Atwell. She can go on my list of "women I wish I was". The list is made up of a lot of British actresses.

The Hangover: Part II - I can't wait to review this, since I'll be having a good rant. I actually went into this thinking that I would like it, since I'm a HUGE fan of the first one. But in the first two minutes, I decided that I really wasn't going to like this movie.  Turns out The Hangover is the kind of movie that is only funny once, and when they make a sequel you realise just how much you can't stand the characters.

So yeah, that's it. Got any good Aussie films to recommend? Any good docos? Anyone not like The Hangover 2 that much?
Oh, and here's a heads up: I might be away from blogging for two days. Tomorrow night, I have the ball (like, the NZ version of the prom), and tomorrow is pretty busy with sign-out at school, hair appointments, make up appointments, etc etc etc. On the next night I'll most likely be dead (figuratively speaking), since me and my friends are having a huge party from 12am onwards. Needless to say, I'll be pretty tired.
So, to make up for the shitty week of releases and my possible two days absence, here's an extremely attractive picture I found of Jeremy Irvine (newcomer who is in War Horse) and a horse. A cute guy+ a horse=way to my heart. Have a good weekend!

  1. I felt exactly the same as you about Hangover 2. Such a waste.

Have a great time at your Ball!! Oh to be young

  2. TH2 is pretty bad, the only funny things about it were the monkey and the transvestite. The lamest part was when Paul Giamati was on screen, he is completely not funny.

  3. That dog looks so cute though *obviously has a love for anything cute when it comes to animals*.

Have a great time at your ball!

And agreeing with Scott on this one - too be young (though I am still young, but yeah, 16-young is a good age!)

  4. I haven't seen either RED DOG nor SNOWTOWN, but I would choose the latter over the former every day of the week. RED DOG just looks like crap.

Have a nice time at the ball and party! Hopefully it is a success!

  5. For good Australian movies, I'd recommend Muriel's Wedding and The Adventures Of Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert.

For good documentaries, I'd recommend Bowling For Columbine, This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Young At Heart, Shut Up And Sing, and Life In A Day.

  6. If you're interested in a cute guy and his horse, my fav is the old fashioned aussie flick "The Man From Snowy River."

16 is an alright age! And I had a great time at the ball.

Tyler - Red Dog looks fun enough, but I probably won't like it all that much.
