Tuesday Links and Other Stuff #1

Every Tuesday, which is officially known as Tuesday Movie Night, I'll be doing a quick post like this highlighting what I'm watching, my favourite film news and of course, the links from you lovely people. Just to snazz things up a bit.

What I'm watching tonight:

I watched one of this week's releases, Cars 2, last night, along with the recently released Adrien Brody thriller Wrecked. Let's just say, both were extremely mediocre. Tonight, I have Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. I've heard good things about Tucker and Dale, and I've also had it on good authority from one of my (male) friends that Transformers: Dark of the Moon is "the best movie of the year" and "mind-blowing". Hey, I liked the first one, loathed the second one...so anything's possible. I'm jsut keeping my expectations low and will try not to be bored during the 154 minute running time.

Trailer of the week:

The UK trailer came out a few weeks ago, but the US trailer just came out this week (nothing much has changed, really) so this qualifies as my favourite trailer of the week. I've already talked a bit about Shame and I'm pretty damn excited to see it. And I know that it is just a trailer, but every time I watch it I just want to go out and make a movie. Especially one about addiction.

Favourite film news of the week:

Jessica Chastain will be playing Princess Diana in the controversial biopic called Caught in Flight. Is this perfect casting or what? Or maybe I just love Chastain. Her films are taking years to get here, though, so I guess I'm stuck with my blu-ray of The Tree of Life to tide me over until whenever Take Shelter or Coriolanus get here. But isn't it amazing how six months ago, we hadn't heard of her, and now she's basically everywhere!

Links:
A movie I'd really like to see is Martha Marcy May Marlene, which unfortunately doesn't come out here until February. But Never Too Early Movie Predictions gives it a stellar review, only making me want to watch it more.

Bonjour Tristesse reviews Pina, which just came out in NZ and is a film I wouldn't mine seeing. I like those dance films, and this one looks mind-blowing.

Nikhat at Being Norma Jeane wonders if our generation is being deprived because we have all this new technology which leaves little room for the old technology. I definitely think we are...I would love to have a Super 8 camera but they are nowhere to be seen.

Ryan at The Matinee reflects on his changing tastes. If you've read the article, the girl that he mentions at the start is pretty much like me!

Admittedly, I don't watch a lot of documentaries. Tyler at Southern Vision lists his ten best documentaries. If you're looking for a starting point, definitely watch Night and Fog. It can be found on YouTube...and it still gives me nightmares to this very day.

Matt and the Art of Motion Pictures makes a list of who he thinks will be cinema's 'future legends'. Christopher Nolan is on there. Haters gonna hate, but I still love my 'God' Nolan.

Andy gives one of his only 5 star reviews of the year to We Need to Talk About Kevin, which looks like exactly my kind of movie.

Final words:
My head is buried in my notes at the moment. Got any handy study tips for me?

  1. Study tips? Ummmm....... well, all I can say is that I'd rather study than watch TRANSFORMERS 3 again. Seriously, that movie is the lowest of the low. Easily one of the worst films I've ever seen. Wouldn't watch it even if you paid me to. Fuck... that... shit. Oh, and thanks for the linkage! :)

  2. "Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil" is easily one of my films of the year and also one of the films I really hope gets a sequel as they are probebly one of the best comedy creations in years, let alone a loving tribute to Hickploitation movies!

  3. Ooh study tips. Um if you have a math exam, watching The Hangover before it releases much of the anxiety. WHO DA NERD?!!

Thanks for the link, and I know right. So want a bloody Super 8 camera!

  4. Study tips huh? Here's one.....keep off the bloody internet!!!!!!!!!! As the old proverb goes head down arse up and that means NO distractions! Hahaha I'm pleased I've done all that and got it out of the way in life.

  5. I appreciate the link Stevee. I really enjoyed Tucker and Dale vs. Evil - good fun and genuinely funny! Why are you watching Transformers 3? :-( It's extremely bad, and 2.5 hours you'll never get back! Haha.

  6. I agree with Brent about the study tips, I too have to study so, so much but there are so many distractions (like your blog, damn you). So I'm going now. Oh, and I'm really excited for Shame as well!

  8. Good luck with the studying. I'm so glad I'm done with that ;) As for watching Transformers: Dark of the Moon, just be aware it's 2 hours and a half. I won't say anymore.

  9. T&D was awesome and Shame looks incredible!

As far as study tips go - notecards. A big stack of 'em.

  10. Tyler - Yes, I would rather do anything than watch Transformers again. That shit was baaaaaaaaaad.

Elwood James - A sequel would be bloody awesome!

Nikhat - I watched The Hangover the night before I got my tonsils taken out. It relieved stress! I shall watch it before my science exam, as that is the one that I am the most stressed about.

Brent - I barely go on the internet. I spend most of the day studying and maybe an hour (not even that) on the net. There is unfortunately only so much study one can take.

Andy - Tucker & Dale was genuinely funny! I watched Transformers just to see how bad it was. It was really bad.

Maria Sofia - Ha, I guess it's good that I don't really have to study so much as we did a lot back at school, so I can still have time for the distractions. Sorry that my blog is distracting you.

Sati - My laptop is switched off for basically 23 hours each day. But tonight I've been on a little longer as I felt I deserved a break. And yes, that Shame trailer is lovely!

Castor - Damn you! And yes, 2 and a half hours was not an ideal running time at all.

Robert - I think I'll make some notecards for science. That's a good tip!

  11. Thanks for the link Stevee!

I also think Jessica Chastain will make a great Princess Di. Can't wait to see the first images.

  12. Study tips:

I find pacing around the room reading my notes aloud helps me take them in. This may be different for you but I seem to take more in when I'm moving around and listening to my own voice.

Drink lots of water and take lots of breaks. I'd recommend getting fresh air during your breaks because it refreshes the brain.

I like to chew gum or suck on mints during my exams because apparently in opens up the passages in your brain. They might not allow you to have mints but chewing gum will be fine as long as you keep it low key.

Other than that, note cards, practice essays and all that jazz I guess. Hope that helps. Good luck.

  13. Bonjour Tristesse - You're welcome! I can't wait to see the first images too. She doesn't exactly look like Di, but I'm sure she'll be fantastic anyway!

Leith - Those are some great study tips! I hadn't heard about that chewing gum/mints thing before, but I will definitely try that one! Thank you!

    Matt - You're welcome :)

  14. Thanks for the link love! Unfortunately I don't have any good study tips to share, but I will say that the Shame trailer makes this one of my most anticipated films of the year.
