16 Days of Birthday, Day 3: The Tuesday Movie Nights

Many people hate Tuesdays. With good reason, too. It isn't as annoying as Monday. It may be closer to the end of the week, but not by much...there's still Wednesday and Thursday to get through. Really, it's just a nothing day. But to me? Tuesday is the best day of the week (excluding the weekend, obviously). This is because Tuesday has become my 'movie night'. Why don't I choose the weekend? Because movies are generally released on DVD on Wednesday's in NZ. So, with all of these movies at my disposal just before they come out, I usually get whatever is coming out on the Tuesday and watch them all. Now, I will watch anything. My Tuesday movie watching fate lies completely within the hands of whoever decides the DVD release dates. These Tuesday movie nights can consist of anywhere up to three movies in one night...it's all fun!

Some of these Tuesday movie nights can always turn out to have the weirdest stuff. As I said, I'll watch whatever is coming out, depending on how much time I have. In saying that, everything has to work around my Tuesday movie nights...apart from tonight, when homework got the better of me and I'm only watching the one movie (but I did watch two last night).

So, here are some of the weirdest/coolest/best triple features I've had thanks to my Tuesday movie nights...

8th March 2011: Buried, The Town, The Killer Inside Me
Ha, this was a movie night that I remember very well. I invited a couple of my friends around to watch The Town, because they wanted to, but first we watched Buried. While we all liked the movie enough, we had a huge problem with the end...I think I punched the wall or something. I think we all liked The Town, but I liked it the most. They went home after that, leaving me to suffer the wrath of The Killer Inside Me, which looks really great, but what just a pile of violence and sex, mostly at the same time. I didn't like The Killer Inside Me that much, but this was a triple feature which I liked because all of these films were really well made.

21st June 2011: Sanctum, Season of the Witch, Welcome to the Rileys
This has to be the weirdest bloody lineup of movies that I've ever had to watch in one night. Sanctum was pretty awful...in fact, all I can remember is a whole lot of water. Season of the Witch, however, is the definition of an awful movie. My God, how could a Nicolas Cage movie ever be so boooooooring?! I still, for the life of me, don't even know why I bothered with that bloody movie. Thanks to the awfulness of the first two movies, I managed to really love Welcome to the Rileys. And that has bloody Kristen Stewart in it, for the love of God.

28th June 2011: Gnomeo & Juliet, The Last Exorcism, Tamara Drewe
These three movies weren't particularly memorable, but they were all distinctly different. One was an animated kids movie (that I thought was wildly inappropriate at some times). Another was a doco-style exorcism horror. The last one was a British sex comedy. Apart from the fact that I was wildly sick for the majority of that night after watching the movies and honestly thought I was going to die...they should join all of those genres and make one film. That would be really interesting.

18th July 2011: My Wedding and Other Secrets, The Mechanic, The Warrior's Way
The funny thing about this triple feature is the fact that I didn't particularly want to watch any of these movies. But thanks to the holidays and a whole lot of boredom, I decided to make a night of it. My Wedding and Other Secrets wasn't so bad. The Mechanic and The Warrior's Way? Put me off just picking up random movies for life.

2nd August 2011: The Lincoln Lawyer, The Way Back, Rabbit Hole
This is, by far, the best triple feature I've ever done on a Tuesday. Usually, I'll have a couple of really good movies with a really bad one. But with this lineup, every single movie was excellent. The Lincoln Lawyer, even with Matthew McConaughey, is a smart, tense thriller that never failed to interest me. The Way Back was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. I mean, watching people walk for a very loooooooong time isn't my idea of top entertainment, but I gotta say, I loved nearly every minute of it. Oh, and I'm still jealous of Saoirse Ronan. Rabbit Hole, which was undeniably the movie I was looking forward to the most out of all of them, was damn good too. Well, the performances were bloody amazing. I'm just peeved that Aaron Eckhart didn't get nominated for anything. Gosh, I wish all Tuesday movie nights could be like this!

What's in store for this week?
As I said, homework got the better of me, but I cheated and had my Tuesday movie night on a Monday. Last night I watched the uber-terrible Sucker Punch and Red Riding Hood. Tonight I'm just watching Secretariat, mainly because I like horse movies, and Adam Sandler and his Just Go With It don't interest me that much...

So, do you have a special movie night? Any triple features that were particularly amazing?

  1. Fridays/Saturdays are generally my movie nights. I tend to go to the cinemas on those nights, because then I can drag my friends with me. They work during the week. I, like the apathetic uni student I am, don't have a steady job.

  2. That's insane! I never do double or triple features. I love to watch a movie and ponder it for the rest of the day :) This is just mass consumption!

  3. I love mass consumption - though a one-movie-day is probably healthier and what I do most of the time.

  4. My movie nights can be any night, depending on what I've got to watch. The most movies I've watched in one day is SEVEN, on February 6 of this year. It was a pretty weird septuple feature, consisting of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Vertigo, The 400 Blows, Straw Dogs, Eyes Wide Shut, Utu (the NZ movie), and Blood Simple. Can't get much more variety than that. Well, you can, but I've never succeeded (except for the time I Rewatched Rango and Irreversible back to back).

  5. Triple features? flip. I am lucky if we watch 1!!

If I haven't got the kids to bed on time and the film on by 8.30 then it is too late and we have to forget it. (have to be in bed by 10.30 these days)

Loving the mega mix randomness of it all!! Glad you hated Season of the Witch as much as me!

  6. Ruth - Friday/Saturdays are good movie nights. If only I had a cinema near me!

    Castor - I can take the mass consumption. I'm a movie-fatty!

Lime(tte) - Mass consumption is the best - but one movie at a time is just as good.

Tyler - Wow, good way to spend your Waitangi Day, huh? And I'm sure you can't get much more variety than that!

Custard - That's usually what happens to me on school nights that aren't Tuesdays. I hate school.
Season of the Witch was awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwful!
