What's Happening Where I Am: Cinema and DVD releases here, 05/05/11

Cinema Releases

Source Code - My happy story for the day: I was considering riding my 22 year old horse over to the neighbouring city just so I could go and see this movie, seeing as neither of my parents wanted to volunteer to take me over (actually, I have work on Saturday, Friday night doesn't seem to be an option and I feel a bit mean dragging Mum to a movie on Mother's Day). But Dad came into my room tonight while I was playing Scrabble with my niece (the reason why this post is a rush post as it's getting quite late), and said "I'm going to Palmy next Wednesday night, I have a thing from 5 til 7pm, do you wanna come?" Problem solved. I'm going to watch Source Code next Wednesday. Thank you Dad.

Your Highness - Oh yeah, Your Highness comes out today. I actually forgot this movie existed. And it looks as if the rest of NZ did too, as it was pulled from most of our cinemas just this week, and is only playing a few sessions in the big cities. Sorry, Natalie Portman.

DVD Releases

Burlesque - I have a feeling that Dannevirke has a new favourite movie: Burlesque. Early reviews from many  of the Dannevirke film-elite have come back surprisingly positive. Meh. It was all very predictable, but it was a hell of a lot better than I thought it would be.

Love and Other Drugs - Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway have sex so many times in this movie that by the time I watched my next film (Somewhere) I was wondering where all the sex had gone.
Oh yeah, this movie is about viagra like RED is about the origins of the colour red.

Morning Glory - This movie is so bright. I love Rachel McAdams. Yeah, whatever, I really liked this movie.

Gulliver's Travels - Oh, I'm sorry, I'm allergic to Jack Black's bullshit.
Even if Emily Blunt is involved.

Somewhere - I felt guilty because I didn't like Love and Other Drugs because it dragged and it was quite boring, but then I loved Somewhere, which is probably the slowest film on the face of the Earth. I just found it so interesting, though.

Any thoughts on these films?

  1. I loved Somewhere, despite my partiality to Sofia Coppola. I really enjoyed it. I haven't gotten around to watching Love and Other Drugs...my friends hated it a bit too much.
You have a horse! That's so brilliant.

  2. I've seen none of these, and to be honest, the only one that really interests me is Source Code.
I doubt I could watch any of the others, maybe Morning Glory might be cool if I'm in the right mood though...

Nice write up, it makes me realise that I never know what the hell is going on at my local Cinemas, as I rarely ever go.

  3. Yes! I am glad you like Somewhere. (I can't believe people didn't dig that film, I loved it.) Can't wait to see your write up on the film!

Also, Gulliver's Travelers looks so damn bad...

  4. Nikhat - Somewhere was a really enjoyable movie! I liked how I just felt a part of that movie.
Love and Other Drugs was pretty disappointing. I'll put a review of it up tomorrow, so you can make up your mind.
I have a horse! He's the cutest thing on four furry legs :)

Jack - Well, considering I've seen everything apart from Gulliver's Travels, Your Highness and Source Code, Source Code is looking like the better option.
Morning Glory is a pretty fun movie, if you don't read too much into it.
I rarely get to go to the cinemas (them being an hour away and all), but I like to keep tabs on what's coming out!

Cherokee - I can get why people don't like Somewhere, but I loved it! And I have a full write-up scheduled for tomorrow!
God, we have the Gulliver's Travels trailer playing on the TV at work. It has driven me absolutely bonkers over the past month...I hate Jack Black.
