3rd November 2009

Remember how in the 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' interview I had faith in Matthew McConaughey? Well since watching Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009), I have lost all that faith. The sad thing is, is that the trailer makes this film out to look so good, and watching the movie I realized that the trailer was quite possibly the best thing about it. That's not good at all. No trailer is supposed to be better than the full length movie. Jennifer Garner also stars as Jenny, the woman who Connor (McConaughey) was in love with. I always thought Jennifer Garner was heading somewhere after starring in the film Juno (my second favourite movie of all time), but on the rise to acting stardom she could have done without the stop-off to this film. The story is flat, Connor is visited by ghosts of all his ex-girlfriends, and realized that he'll only ever be able to have an actual relationship with Jenny. Mark Waters has already touched on the 'ghost' story, in 'Just Like Heaven'. That movie was actually really good. And considering that Waters was the one who directed the great 'Mean Girls' (he also cast Lacey Chabert in this film, a.k.a Gretchen), he is well trained on how to make good comedies. Unfortunately, this film is predictable, falls short of the expectations set by it's trailer, and the performances are mediocre. This is a simple must avoid.
4/10
