1st November 2009

Still recovering from This Is It (have to see that movie again), I decided to watch Star Trek (2009), a film which I've been looking forward to seeing ever since it came out in the cinemas. Usually, I avoid sci-fi movies, because I think they are the biggest waste of time ever. But when I was at home sick a reviewer on a television show that he would give this movie 1000 stars out of 5 if he could, so I was curious to see if it was that good. Another reason was the casting of Chris Pine. I watched him in the film 'Just My Luck', which starred Lindsay Lohan when she was a half-decent actress, and I really liked him. Seeing him in this film, as the main character was a surprise, because I didn't know that many people knew who he was, or liked him so much to put him in a multi-million blockbuster remake like this. The word remake always makes me shiver, but I have never seen anything to do with Star Trek (the old version) for obvious sci-fi reasons, so this film doesn't seem like a remake, just a slight upgrade. However, I did know about Spock's eyebrows (what was up with that guy? He was so perfect). The story is largely about James T. Kirk and Spock's rivalry, on the USS Enterprise, in the earlier days. Along with a sort of war of the worlds. J.J. Abrams, who I think is one of the most mysterious people in the business, manages to keep the film under control, with so many mind-blowing special effects and so many cast members (kiwi Karl Urban being one of them) all on one ship in space, does extremely well. Now I'm waiting for the sequel. I'm not a Trekkie yet, but 'Live Long and Prosper'.
8/10
