The Last Links Post
I don't really like putting labels on things saying "this is the last time I'll ever do it", but alas, it must be done. One of my favourite things about blogging has been sharing the work that other people have been doing. While I will still find a little time to read my favourite blogs, I decided to dedicate one last post to some of the highlights from other people's blogs that I've seen in the past few years. I've gone through my previous lot of links posts to pick out my favourites, so surely there'll be some gems missing but here are some highlights from the past:
In March 2012, Alex at And So It Begins wondered why there weren't many female cinematographers. Gave me an idea.
In August 2012, Bacholerotte director Leslye Headland wrote a guest piece on Film Experience called "Growing Up Cinephile". One day I'll write one of these of my own.
In December 2011, Corey at Just Atad wrote a defence for War Horse. Never before have I defended a film like that, and Corey gets everything right.
In March 2012, Jandy at Row Three ranked all 72 of the Best Picture winners she'd seen. Such an epic list which gave me a bit of inspiration for something I could tackle in the future.
In December 2012, Jessica at The Velvet Cafe wondered where all the film lovers had gone and where all of the snarky plot hole spotters came from.
In September 2011, Scott at Front Room Cinema made an infographic of the difference between a "movie" and a "film".
In February 2012, Max at Anomalous Material wrote a list of "not the best films of the 2000s".
In February 2012, Sati at Cinematic Corner shared 48 hidden images in Black Swan - I rewatched it the other day and was amazed by how much was hidden.
In November 2011, Steven at Surrender to the Void looked at the career of Jena Malone, complete with her best performances.
In October 2011, The Kid in the Front Row had inspirational words of how we must defeat our inner critic.
In March 2012, Nikhat at Being Norma Jeane asked whether films can shock us into liking them (I've also gotta highlight this post of screenshots of Ralph Fiennes in Quiz Show from August 2011, which was pretty much my favourite thing ever)
In July 2011, Tyler at Southern Vision shared his ten best countries for film production in the world.
In July 2011, Cherokee at Can You Dig It wrote about her childhood feminist hero was Trinity from The Matrix.
In April 2012, Univarn at A Life in Equinox wrote about how blogging has to be pushed aside (pretty much what is happening to me now).
In October 2012, Anna at Defiant Success shared her favourite blokes from across the pond. Both a good list and good eye candy in one.
Between 2011 and 2012, Lesya at Eternity of Dream hosted a few "In Genres" blogathons which featured a lot of great recommendations.
In January 2013, Mettel at Mettel Ray's Movie Blog wrote a post on how humiliation is a downfall of modern comedies.
In October 2011, Ryan at The Matinee reflected on how his taste has changed throughout the years. (Ryan also wrote the sweetest tribute to the site which had my Mum in tears. So very lucky.)
In July 2012, Mette at Lime Reviews and Strawberry Confessions wrote a perfect post on how she'd been getting a bit confuzzled about watching movies.
Again, this is not a definitive list. I just wanted to avoid reviews and look at some of the great opinions that have come through - but I really am thankful to every single one of you for being great inspirations for me. What are some of your favourite posts from here?

Monday Links and Other Stuff #45 + Awards and Important Announcement
I'm not watching anything tonight...but here's my important announcement:
Tomorrow morning I will be jetting off to Japan for 11 days, so naturally, I won't be around. I am going to Nagoya for seven days, as we are going to our sister school over there, and then we will be going to Tokyo for three days for free time. Very exciting stuff! While I'm away I will miss three big awards season things: the Golden Globes, the BAFTA nominations and of course, the Oscar nominations which decided they'd be very early for some stupid reason. I won't be back until the 19th, so the Oscars will be old news by then, but I will be posting my thoughts. I won't be covering the Golden Globes, and I may cover the BAFTA noms (even though they have zilch power now, they may still be interesting). Hopefully y'all will still be around by then!
Another important announcement:
I passed 500,000 hits today, so yay!
Video of the week:
Because this is hilarious - I want the rapping part to be my ringtone.

Awards...
Around the past couple of weeks, there have been a couple of awards going around. Since you've already seen them around, I won't bother with passing it on, as everyone has one now. If you're in my links list below, and you haven't been nominated, say that I gave you one. Here's the rules to the 'Blog of the Year Award' that I received from The Cinematic Spectacle and Defiant Success:
- Select the blog(s) you think deserve the "Blog of the Year 2012" Award.
- Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen - there's no minimum or maximum number of blogs required - and "present" them with their award.
- Please include a link back to this page and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)
- Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the "rules" with them You can now also join our Facebook group – click "like" on this page "Blog of the Year 2012" Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience
- As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars.
Second is the Versatile Blogger award which I received from The Cinematic Spectacle, Defiant Success, Let's Be Splendid About This, Aziza's Picks, and the Very Inspiring Blogger award I received from Film Sloth. For each of them, I have to post seven facts about myself:
- I cannot stop listening to Lana Del Rey's album Born to Die: The Paradise Edition.
- Hopefully on the 25th of January I'm going to see Django Unchained with my friends - going to a movie on this day has become a bit of a tradition, as in 2011 we saw The King's Speech on this day, and last year we saw War Horse.
- I once did the make-up for the town's production of Les Miserables, so this musical is very familiar to me.
- I'm super excited to go on the plane tomorrow - like it is pretty much the thing I'm the most excited for.
- I am making my calendar this year myself. This month, I made a page dedicated to Jessica Chastain, next month's one is Oscar themed. I haven't done the rest, though.
- I really wanna go to India to do some volunteer work, since that it is where my Grandma used to live, and because I like helping people.
- Since I'll probably be buying an iPhone while I'm away, I'm selling my iPod to my friend for an easy price: Looper on Blu-Ray. I'm fairly sure that movies make me happier than actual money.
Blog of the Month...
With a new month comes a new blog on the sidebar, and this month, the honour goes to Josh at The Cinematic Spectacle. For some good Oscar coverage, and also plenty of going 'back in the day', this is the site where you wanna be. There's so much variety!

Alex does a retrospective on the brilliant career of Quentin Tarantino - and it would seem that Alex has a lot of love for the guy.
Andrew tries to navigate the immensely difficult Best Supporting Actor race this year, and puts in a vote for Ewan McGregor for The Impossible. Anything could happen in that category, I tell ya.
One movie which I think is immensely underrated is Vamps, which is actually quite a sweet little comedy (plus it has Dan Stevens being cute). Alex (Film Forager) quite liked it too.
Our blog of the month has a brilliant list of the 10 things we need to know before the Oscar noms. Seems like we have another awesome year on our hands.
Dan Heaton checks out Black Swan, which gave me a bit of nostalgia since I was all crazy over it this time two years ago.
SDG has listed his 20 favourite 'new-to-me' movies of the year - and his number one is awesomely awesome.
At the end of last year (haha, I love saying that), Ryan listed his favourite shots from 2012. We were blessed with cinematic beauty this year.
Everyone has been unveiling their top films of 2012, but I must point out Tyler's list, which has a great, eclectic mix. Plus, Detachment was an amazing film.
And in the new year we got a couple of new mega-sites: Your Face and Movie Mezzanine. Check 'em out!
Final word:
Who would you most like to see in the Best Supporting Actor race this year?

Tuesday Links and Other Stuff #44
What I'm watching tonight...
Well, it has been a strange week since I last had a Tuesday Movie Night. On Wednesday night, I was announced as Head Girl of our school. It was pretty much the happiest moment of my life because I can honestly say I wasn't expecting it at all. Apart from the party straight after the prize-giving, I haven't had a lot of time to celebrate because my 87 year old Grandma who has advanced dementia has recently become very sick. It has been an exhausting week, as she's been hitting rock bottom, but then she comes right again. And then there was the Connecticut shooting, which shocked me more than anything. My thoughts are with those affected - such an awful thing to happen.
So yes, seemingly everything is happening right now, and I'm immensely exhausted from it all. And it will just keep going. But I'm buying all of my Christmas presents tomorrow, which will most definitely cheer me up. That's after I settle down with some movies. The Bourne Legacy is the only release tomorrow (Hope Springs and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World are out on Friday, strangely), so I'll be watching that, alongside something else in my pile.
Video of the week...
Among the good things of last week was the fact that Genrocks brought out Filmography 2012. I have literally waited all year for this. And I will go on watching it at least 50 times throughout the year until the next one comes out. I'm not joking.
Links...
Josh breaks down his best screenplays from the 1940s. Man, there were some good writers around back in those days.
Dan writes about the terrific set design in Children of Men, one of the more terrifyingly realistic dystopian films.
Nikhat is on her way to celebrating her third anniversary with Being Norma Jeane, and she's celebrating with all kinds of lists. Her one on her favourite looking films is fantastic!
Local mega-site Flicks has their top 20 of 2012 (going by NZ release dates) up and the number one is pretty darn cool.
Sam reflects on the six best soundtracks of 2012 - you'll be wanting to fill your iPod up after reading this list!
The Film Experience has an interesting post up about the flaws within the Best Picture hopefuls this year. Not every film can be perfect.
Bonjour Tristesse shares their list of the best foreign films of 2012. A great guide to what I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for.
Andy shares his favourite male and female performances of 2012. Any mention of Matty M and Fassy is a win with me.
Candice was lucky enough to check out Zero Dark Thirty and she had good notices for Jessica Chastain. Still my most anticipated film, like, ever.
This will be my last links post for the rest of the year. Like most people I will doing a few retrospective posts (based on the few 2012 films I've seen, haha), but for now, if you've ever been linked on one of these posts during the year, thanks for being so awesome!

Tuesday Links and Other Stuff #43
What I'm watching tonight...
This is a pretty weak week but I've still found three movies to watch. Take This Waltz is the one I'm most excited for, The Campaign is pretty much a time-filler and I want to see just how bad Iron Sky is. Unless it is really good. But I doubt it is when it has a premise like that.
Video of the week...
Oh hey there Anne Hathaway, didn't see you behind all of those awards!
A bit of randomness...
A couple of pics from the ball last week. It was a lot of fun. I liked dressing up and stuff. And I really liked my dress. I must find other excuses to wear it again some time. Like when I need to mow the lawn.
Blogathon!
Remember that my blogathon happens in a couple of days. I've had a few entries already, you guys are awesome! Just in case you've forgotten the details, be sure to go here.

Leith has been working extra hard over at Ramble Film with a slew of great content, but I do love that he loved Killer Joe. Any person who loves that film is awesome.
The latest problem going around the film-loving folk at the moment is actually questioning how much film-lovers love films nowadays. Ryan and Jessica weigh in and both provide some of the most interesting reading in some time.
Anna saw and quite liked Silver Linings Playbook - I know I'll probably be the same.
Anyone got their Christmas spirit all sorted? I know I don't. Reel Insight does, however, with Jess and Rachel doing 25 days of Christmas with their naughty and nice Christmas movies.
Brittani quite liked Anna Karenina, a movie which pretty much flew under the radar after such a big build up.
Mettel saw Lola Versus, and had pretty much the same opinion as me on how disappointing it was.
And because no-one can get enough Jessica Chastain in their life, here is what is now my favourite photoshoot of hers (and I have a few), done for V Magazine.
Final word...

Tuesday Links and Other Stuff #42 + Blogathon!
What I'm watching tonight...
This is probably the first time a blogger has made me tear up but Anna did it, when she shared her experiences of meeting JESSICA CHASTAIN AND DAN STEVENS, a.k.a two of my favouritest people in the world.
Josh shares his top ten favourite female performances, and it is pretty hard to argue with some of his choices.
Nikhat appreciates this year's coolest posters, and most of my favourites are on that list.
Nick recently celebrated his fifth birthday on his blog, but it comes with a sad announcement. Alas, go and wish him well!
Alex shares ten actors who deserve more work. I find it hard to disagree with any of his choices.
James has pretty much the same opinion of The Deep Blue Sea as I do. Still, it was nice to see Rachel Weisz getting the NYFCC award for her work.
Final word:
Who/what are you thinking you might do your 'case' post on for the blogathon?
So I was supposed to be watching The Grey, Total Recall and Step Up 4 tonight, but unfortunately something happened to our orders and we're not getting any of the DVDs until tomorrow. So hopefully I can catch up on the two biggies, The Grey and Total Recall tomorrow. In the meantime, I'll probably catch up on Weekend, which I just got from Fatso. I've been looking forward to seeing this film for ages.
Video of the week...
These 'honest trailers' always make me LOL. Especially if they're about anything Twilight related.
Blog of the Month...
My last featured blog of 2012 will be Sati's fantastically beautiful blog Cinematic Corner. Sati knows her way around Photoshop, and I won't lie that she's influenced some of the design work on this blog. Plus, she's awesome - she loves Lana Del Rey, The Dark Knight Rises and Downton Abbey. So much win. You could probably spend hours on her blog. I know I do!
Blogathon...
So I thought I might do my first attempt at a real blogathon, but since I'm not a person who likes waiting, I'm given you little over a week's notice. Basically, the idea of the blogathon is to tie in with the awards season hoopla. The subject is Making a Case for Movies that Probably Won't Get Any Awards Recognition this year. Basically, just think of the movies that won't figure highly in awards season, but you think they should. Maybe you want The Dark Knight Rises or Skyfall to get Best Picture. Or maybe you want to look at some performances, like maybe Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe or Emily Blunt in Looper. You could even look at editing/cinematography/music alone. If you're doing a film, you're not limited to one category to look at. Think creatively, but it honestly doesn't matter if you pick the same as someone else (if it makes any difference, I'll obviously be making the case for The Dark Knight Rises). Here's what you need to know:
-Post any time between now and the 12th December (for most of you, if you live anywhere close to me, 13th December is when I'll post everyone's links). I will accept late entries for a couple of days afterwards. The reason why I want it to be next week is that I want it to happen before the Golden Globes, and by then we'll have a good idea of who will be big in awards season, therefore making the case won't seem so special.
-Title your post as "Making the Case for __________" You can use any imaging you want.
-I'd prefer only one case to be made, but if you want to make a whole list, that's cool with me.
-Send your entries into my email, which is filmjunkie25[@]hotmail.com (remove brackets). If you're unsure of the cut-off, I'll put a note out on Twitter when we're getting close to it.
So be creative and good luck!

A little while ago I recorded the Ultimate Last LAMB Standing on the LAMBCast. I got up at 6am for this thing, so you all better listen to it.

Tuesday Links and Other Stuff #41
What I'm watching tonight...
Well, I watched The Dark Knight Rises again last night, and it was still as bloody amazing as I remember it to be. Plus, it looks stunning on Blu-Ray. It was cool to watch it alone at home because I could let my ugly crying all out. Seriously, I was pretty much screaming and then I was doing this thing where I was crying but smiling at the same time - I looked like the Joker. So anyway, with that all cleared up for now (until I buy it on Blu-Ray and watch it over and over again for the rest of the week), the only releases for this week I have left to watch are Magic Mike and Bel Ami. And I should probably watch The Wicker Man, but I might leave that Cage Rage for tomorrow.
Video of the week...
Just because I'm beyond excited for Les Miserables. So excited that I can't even live life without seeing it.
A little bit of randomness...
You may have seen this already but for the Christmas parade last weekend I dressed up as Princess Merida, kind of to promote Brave, and because I don't have the figure for a Catwoman outfit. And here was the result. My hair isn't naturally that colour, but I do have ringlets like Merida's...they just aren't as wild.
A little more randomness...
If you're interested, there was an article about me in the paper (not the local one - a city one, which is kind of a big deal in good old NZ). My Killer Joe review was quoted and everything. Plus, I've obviously got more than 50,000 hits (nine times that, in fact), but hey, this was some good exposure!
Links...
Awards Daily has some early praise for Zero Dark Thirty, which points towards the possibility of Jessica Chastain winning Best Actress. That would make me the happiest person on Earth.
Speaking of Jess, Sati has a review of Lawless. I've given up caring about this movie - which comes out in cinemas here in February, for heaven's sake - and her review reminds me of why I feel that way.
Bonjour Tristesse sheds some light on Laurence Anyways, a movie which I have a little bit of interest in. Especially because this is Xavier Dolan's third film, and he is only 23.
I've officially named The Perks of Being a Wallflower my "favourite movie that I haven't seen" - and Andy's review tells me that there's no way that I'm not going to adore it.
Jessica writes a wonderful post on why it is okay to go to the theatre alone. On the odd occasion that I do get the opportunity to go to the cinemas, I usually prefer going alone. That means I get to cry alone.
Alex made a list of his favourite movie character introductions, and Nikhat followed suit. I feel a blogathon coming on!
Mettel loved Brave, which I think will end up being one of the most underrated mainstream films of the year. It is so darn brilliant.
Final word...
Do you have a 'favourite movie you haven't seen yet'?

Alex made a list of his favourite movie character introductions, and Nikhat followed suit. I feel a blogathon coming on!
Mettel loved Brave, which I think will end up being one of the most underrated mainstream films of the year. It is so darn brilliant.
Final word...
Do you have a 'favourite movie you haven't seen yet'?

What I'm watching tonight...
Well, my English exam is done and dusted. I think the essays went beyond well, as long as I answered the questions the way they were supposed to be answered (I have huge issues with that...I guess that's because I write well without any purpose, which kind of defeats the purpose of writing). And now, I'll never have to think of The Shawshank Redemption or World War One poems ever again. Since it is a week until my next exam, I can hunker down tonight and watch a few movies. I only really have Arthur Christmas and Killer Joe on tap, but I do have to watch another Nicolas Cage movie before tomorrow so that will fill in the night.
Video of the week...
Warm Bodies looks like so much fun. Even if my boy Nicholas Hoult is a zombie...he makes a pretty cute one. And yeah, that's all I have to say about that one.
Just a random picture to get you into the Christmas spirit...
I was made to put up Christmas decorations at work in the weekend, and all I could think about was making the entire window The Dark Knight Rises themed. Because The Dark Knight Rises comes out at the end of this month and I don't know about you, but I love that film. So that's the tinsel Batman I made, and I just need to make a sign and some other stuff. To all you people who didn't like The Dark Knight Rises, just know that Blockbuster Dannevirke will have a cool Christmas window because of it. Boom.
Links...
Josh has his early Oscar predictions up, which reminds me...I should probably get onto mine. But I literally don't know anything because I haven't seen anything.
Sarah reviews the criminally underrated Tyrannosaur, which is one film that I could never sit through again.
Steven reviews Jack and Diane, a movie starring Riley Keough and Juno Temple which looks extremely odd, but in a slightly intriguing way.
Mettel has made her Movie Alphabet into a blogathon. Go submit your entries and keep an eye out for mine, coming later this week!
Also sharing the love for Anne Hathaway on her birthday was Sati. Plus, this most comes complete with gorgeous pictures.
It seems that Alex was rather overwhelmed by Rust and Bone...be sure to check out his enthusiastic review on one of my most anticipated films.
Candice lists down five black actors who could take on the role of James Bond. We all know that Idris Elba is headed for the 007, though.
It seems that Ryan quite loved Lincoln. I'm always excited for anything Spielberg, but it has taken me a while to get excited for this one...but I totally am now.
Final word...
What is your favourite 'limited release' movie of 2012 so far?

What I'm watching tonight...
Yuss...tomorrow is our last day of school before exam leave. I'm kinda scared though, because it is our last year of school that we'll have another year of school waiting for us, if you know what I mean. Oh well, the study leave is welcomed as I plan to ace (some) exams and watch a whole lot of movies. And this will be my last Tuesday Movie Night on a school night until February. I'll be watching Snow White and the Huntsman and Friends with Kids, which will kick off the best month of DVD releases ever apart from July. I would have liked to have caught up with The Cabin in the Woods again, but I don't have the time at the moment. But hey, soon I'll have nothing but time.
Video of the week...
What are we all thinking about the Side Effects trailer? Apparently this is Steven Soderbergh's last film, which is a great shame (even though I've never been the biggest fan of it). I'm just excited to see Rooney Mara, because she's awesome.
Blog of the month...
With a new month comes a bit of a sidebar mix around, and also the blog of the month. This month, the blog that gets to adorn my sidebar is Defiant Success, run by the lovely Anna. There's reviews aplenty here, so if you're looking for something, no doubt Anna has it covered.
Links...
Sharing Vivien Leigh's birthday is the awesome Sam Rockwell, who Sati does an awesome appreciation post for.
SDG shares his list of the best examples of actors directing themselves. Major kudos for Charlie Chaplin's work in City Lights.
Bonjour Tristesse has a review up of Rust & Bone, a film I'm very much looking forward to seeing.
To celebrate her 400th post, Mettel Ray has put together her movie alphabet. It is definitely awesome!
Speaking of celebrations, the LAMB had its 5th birthday last week, with a new design to go with it. Check it out!
Tyler shares the scariest movies he has ever seen. We share the same number one.
Another person celebrating a blog birthday was Mette over at Lime Reviews, who shared her views on the blogging world/world in general. Very inspiring stuff.
Sam was completely blind-sided by The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and sings its praises here. While I wait for the film, I'm going to read the book a few thousand times.

What I'm watching tonight...
First of all, I come with an apology: I haven't been around an awful lot lately. I managed to get a freaking virus on Sunday night, of all nights, and I couldn't make it to the computer yesterday. The other two days I had off last week were just me being lazy. Seriously, it isn't good. Anyway, because of that virus, I'm taking it easy on the movies tonight, with only The Amazing Spider-Man to keep me company for the night. I do hope to be watching Attack the Block (finally it's coming out in NZ, after 50 billion years) tomorrow night. And then we're heading into November, which means The Dark Knight Rises trailer will be at work making everything better in my life!!!!!
Video of the week...
I haven't done one of these links posts in ages so I haven't had a chance to just highlight how awesome the Zero Dark Thirty official trailer is. It has so much Jessica Chastain (but not so much of her speaking). New most anticipated film for 2013 (since it is only getting a small release in 2012 to be eligible for Oscar stuffs)? I think so.
Links...
Everyone has to stop what they're doing, because Tyler is back blogging at Southern Vision. Plus, his return to blogging is centred on the "Directorial Perfection" of Hunger.
Alex takes a look at the career of writer/director/actor Edward Burns, who I've always wanted to see more of. Such a great guide on the guy!
Ryan ponders over the power of star ratings. It is a well-worn debate, but he definitely brings some ideas to the table.
Andy got to interview Paul Thomas Anderson (needless to say, I'm VERY jealous), and here is the outcome. PTA sounds like a very interesting guy.
Earlier this year I went and saw a one-man play called Private Peaceful, which was a fantastic experience. Now there's a movie out based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo (with more than one person acting it out), and Diana got to see it.
Anna has a review of the very scary Freaks. Seriously, I don't think I could ever stomach that film again.
Nikhat got to check out Skyfall before most of us, and she loved it. I can feel the Daniel Craig crush coming back...
Love a bit of Hollywood Memorabilia? I know I do. Here's a comprehensive site filled with all sorts.
Final word...
Who is one director you'd really like to interview?

What I'm watching tonight...
Here's the thing...I was actually really excited to watch Rock of Ages tonight. I was just in the mood for a musical. But it didn't show up. And then we made the connection that it actually comes out next week, unlike what our order sheet told us. Which leaves barely anything big that is to be released this week, since I had the unfortunate task of watching That's My Boy last night. So I've decided to watch Passion Play just because, Jeff Who Lives at Home since I missed it on its release, and maybe Rampart since I saw it on a preview disc that was out of sync, so I didn't really give it a fair chance. I could be doing schoolwork or reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but it is Tuesday and it is the holidays, so it wouldn't feel right if I watched less than three movies tonight.
Video of the week...
Anyone seen this? It is pretty old, but I feel like everyone needs a reminder that Christoph Waltz is one of the awesomest people on earth every now and again.
Links...
Dan is looking at box office flops, and has started off by looking at this year's John Carter. This film was pretty darn unfortunate in every way, but it was still pretty okay.
Bonjour Tristesse has been at VIFF, and has obviously been very busy there. Check out their quick takes of all the films they've watched here.
Tom has been living it up large at NYFF, and got to catch up with The Paperboy which looks...interesting.
Sati will be celebrating her first birthday over at Cinematic Corner tomorrow (so be prepared with well wishes!), but in the countdown, she has shared her favourite performances and movie tracks.
Taking my newly made award of best review of the year is Ryan's review of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Like the book, it is kinda life-defining when you're my age. And yeah, it is still my most anticipated film for like, ever.
It seems that Anna has joined the legions of people who loved The Cabin in the Woods.
Aziza got to see Now is Good, which she wasn't terribly impressed by. I doubt I'll be any different, but I am looking forward to seeing Jeremy Irvine's beautiful face on screen again.
Final word...
What's a movie that everyone hates, but you love?

What I'm watching tonight...
Yay for the holidays. It means that I can watch a lot without feeling bad about it. So even What to Expect When You're Expecting, The Dictator and The Raven - three films which I have zero interest in - seem like a good night.
Video of the week...
I've always loved these 'Honest Trailers', and this The Avengers one is no exception. So many laughs to be had.
Blog of the month...
Wow, a new month has rolled around. The blog that gets to grace my sidebar for the next month is Whoa, This is Heavy! Helmed by Asrap, this is a pretty funny blog, and also, Asrap has the best comments. So go check it out!
Links...
I actually haven't heard that much about The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but Nick over at Anomalous Material has given it a good review. The book is rather swell, too.
One film that continues to elude me is Pariah, which Stephanie quite liked.
All these blogging meet-ups have got me kind of jealous. Nick of Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob got to hang with Tom Clift and James Blake Ewing, and it sounds like an interesting time.
If you haven't already, go and wish Alex and his blog And So It Begins a very happy FIFTH blogiversary.
JBT at Big Thoughts From a Small Mind ponders over how underrated Kelly MacDonald is. I couldn't agree more.
Jessica had a bit of a rough time watching documentary Bully.
Rachel at Reel Insight seemed to quite enjoy Pitch Perfect. Surprisingly, I quite want to see the film, but Looper means more to me than that one, and I can't even get to see Looper. Sigh. DVD time.
Final word...
An actor/actress you find criminally underrated?

What I'm watching tonight...
I don't know why suppliers think it is okay to just release a whole lot of movies on the week before the holidays. Okay, I get why they do that, but it isn't very helpful when there's six movies that I want to see but I can only manage three on a Tuesday night. I caught The Pirates! Band of Misfits yesterday (very cool), and I'll be catching Dark Shadows, The Five-Year Engagement and Mirror Mirror tonight. Hick and Jeff Who Lives at Home shall have to wait until next week. I mean, it is already dodgy that I'm watching three movies tonight because I have so much school work to catch up on, and I'm extremely sick at the moment. Ah well, I do a little too much for my own good.
Video of the week...
So this trailer for Mama happened. It has Jessica Chastain with black hair and looking bad ass. Enough said.
Links...
Jess at Reel Insight quite liked W.E., and managed not to compare any component of the film to Spanx. Seriously, how my brain works is beyond me.
Somehow, by either drugs, coffee or no sleep, Ryan has managed to post every day for 1000 days. 1000 days. Jeekies.
Alex, probably the list master, has a list of the ten best films about addiction. I love films about addiction myself, so it was nice to see such a complex, interesting list.
The amazing Bonjour Tristesse has just celebrated their second year of being open for business. Go send them some congratulations!
Asrap offers up a pretty good review of Dredd, which I'm totally looking forward to (apart from the fact that it is an R18 here, sadface).
Mettel Ray just watched My Neighbour Totoro, and like me, thought it was just the cutest thing.
Andy reviews Looper, which is probably going to be the highlight of my school holidays.
Courtney reviews Frances Ha over at Anomalous Material, which definitely helped in making me more excited for this film.
Final word...
What's your favourite modern movie shot in black-and-white?

What I'm watching tonight...
This is actually the second week in which I've been all excited to see This Must Be the Place but it hasn't been at the shop. Last week was understandable, since I got the release dates mixed up. Today wasn't, because it was actually supposed to come out tomorrow, but it is M.I.A. Instead, I only have The Lady and The Woman in Black to watch. This week's release slate is so funny - on one hand we have The Lady and The Woman in Black, and on the other we have Man on a Ledge and Men in Black 3. And then we have The Woman in Black and Men in Black 3. Of course I'd notice that.
Video of the week...
I'm not very into fragrance advertisements but oh wow, this has melted my heart. Like, after I saw it, I made a point of wearing white and purple to the show. Jessica Chastain is the most beautiful woman in the world. End of story. And the fact that this is made by Nicolas Winding Refn also excites me.
Links...
As per usual, Ryan's TIFF coverage was fantastic. One day I'm gonna get there. One day.
Also at TIFF with some brilliant coverage was Tom Clift. And now he's off to soak up some more festival goodness. Which makes me feel sad because I didn't even go to the NZFF.
While I've been working hard at Little Shop of Horrors, Ruth has been working hard at a short film project, Weeding In. Check out her behind-the-scenes post.
Scott reviews Dredd, which I'm surprisingly looking forward to seeing - mainly because our man Karl Urban is doing so well for himself.
Alex, who also happens to be the blog of the month, has a couple of lists of the most game-changing Best Picture winners and the least deserving winners. I love Oscar-y lists.
A little while back Mette looked at the colourful costumes from The Wizard of Oz. Now there's a show I'd love to do.
Nikhat offers up three mini reviews on Margaret, 2 Days in New York and Bachelorette - three films which I really look forward to seeing, especially the latter.
The Kid in the Front Row takes a look back at Cemetery Junction, one of the most underrated films like, ever.
Final word...
After TIFF happened, what is now hot on your radar? Mine is currently Silver Linings Playbook, although I'm now extra excited for The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Looper, Dredd, Cloud Atlas, Much Ado About Nothing, The Place Beyond the Pines, Rust and Bone, Seven Psychopaths and Smashed.

What I'm watching tonight...
Absolutely nothing. I had rehearsal (where I had to sing and as we all know, I don't sing outside of the shower). Alas, the only thing coming out this week is The Avengers, which I'll be watching with my friends next Tuesday. I can't wait to see evil Tom Hiddleston all over again.
Video of the week...
I'm sorry but font jokes always get me going. The way to my heart is probably via a font joke.
Links...
Andrew's 90s performances tournament is going on...remember LEONARDO DICAPRIO and RALPH FIENNES!!!!!
Sati takes a look at rising star Juno Temple, who I've always had a soft spot for.
Stephanie reviews the brilliant We Need to Talk About Kevin from a parental point of view. I definitely don't think I'll be watching this when I have kids.
Andy has been telling us all about his experiences at the Melbourne International Film Festival (man, I miss Melbourne!!), starting his diary here.
It was Nikhat's birthday too last week - if you haven't already, go wish her a belated happy birthday!
Lesya's Speechless Blogathon went on air last week, and although I unfortunately couldn't take part in it, it was cool to the amount of people that did.
It seems that Mette was one of the few people who really liked Cosmopolis. I'm still holding out a little hope for it.
Diana got to see On the Road a little while back, a film which she was looking forward to very much.
I haven't yet seen Bacholerette (though I desperately want to), but over at The Film Experience, the writer/director Leslye Headland was guest blogging and she did a marvellous post called "Growing Up Cinephile". One day when I'm old enough, I'm going to do this.
And for something random but extremely cool, here is a cool presentation that explains Inception. Even though after 17 watches I have it all pretty well explained, this was awesome to tinker with.
Final word...
Favourite silent film?
Absolutely nothing. I had rehearsal (where I had to sing and as we all know, I don't sing outside of the shower). Alas, the only thing coming out this week is The Avengers, which I'll be watching with my friends next Tuesday. I can't wait to see evil Tom Hiddleston all over again.
Video of the week...
I'm sorry but font jokes always get me going. The way to my heart is probably via a font joke.

What I'm watching tonight...
The only good thing about being sick is that I have an excuse to sit around all day and watch movies. Which is good, because I can watch all of the releases (which also have very small run-times - a definite plus). I've caught up with The Big Year, a surprisingly average film with a great cast, and Haywire, which was pretty close to being a terrible film. Now I just have Wanderlust (for the cast, people, for the cast), The Sitter (this movie is exactly what I'm in the mood for) and one of the last 2011 films I'm anticipating, Martha Marcy May Marlene. Exciting.
Many apologies/announcement...
I'm sure no-one has noticed but I've been absent all weekend. Mainly because I've been far too busy for my own good, but also because this is a little bit of foreshadowing. For the remainder of the week, after I've done my last anime post, I'm going to be doing my 2011 retrospective. I realise that 2011 happened seven months ago but we all have to remember that I live in NZ where we're seven months behind in everything. I'll do my monthly review post and then I'll be letting the blog go for a little while. I don't know how long I'll be - I'll probably come out of hiding when I can finally enjoy giving all my nights up to blogging again. Sorry, guys.
Video of the week...
I'm sure that there were variations of this song in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but this track from The Dark Knight Rises' soundtrack is beautiful. Please. I need to see it again.
Links...
Last week I was interviewed by the LAMBpyre. Check it out.
Nikhat wants to know: who's the more badass female superhero of the year? Black Widow or Catwoman?
Jessica sheds some light on the awesome Strange Days, which never gets enough love.
I could share a whole lot of reviews on The Dark Knight Rises here but chances are you're sick to death of them. But I did LOVE Alex's review, mainly because we're both on the exact same page. Which is more rare than I previously thought.
Leith shares his thoughts on 50/50 and 21 Jump Street, two of the most enjoyable films on DVD here at the moment.
Brittani shares some love with the brilliant Tyrannosaur.
Mette looks at the costumes from The Avengers. I'd take any opportunity to dress up as any one of them.
Final word...

What I'm watching tonight...
This is kind of a lulled week in July: the mighty month of great releases. I caught 21 Jump Street (so funny) and London Boulevard (I've already forgotten it) last night, along with a rewatch of Batman Begins. Tonight I'll be checking out smaller titles Headhunters and The Decoy Bride (Kelly Macdonald!). School may be back in business, but all I'm worried about at the moment is The Dark Knight Rises. Two more sleeps!!!!!!
Video of the week...
I feel like The Perks of Being a Wallflower trailer kinda went unnoticed, especially because I can't remember when it was released. Anyway, I'm excited to see it because of Ezra Miller, who I'm kinda crushing on after We Need to Talk About Kevin even though he scared the crap out of me. I love being a teenager.
Links...
Tyler shares his favourite closing shots in films. A list idea I'd like to have a crack at in the future.
Mette writes a perfect post about her confuzzledness over movie-watching and blogging. This is basically the story of my life.
Alex does a wonderful retrospective on Christopher Nolan's films to kick off his week of Nolan. I think he may even love Nolan more than I do (!)
Anyone else a fan of An Education here? Steven has a great review of that wonderful film.
Nikhat updates us on her animation month marathon, with the brilliantly sad Grave of the Fireflies in the mix.
Andy has a review of the ever elusive Margaret, which I want to see based on the interesting comments coming out of it.
Have you been checking out the LAMB's review tourney? I thought I'd be able to pick the writers out from under their pseudonyms, but I'm stumped!
Lesya has two blogathons for us: one focusing on silent films and the other calling for recommendations on New York-centered films. Go join!
Jessica's blog The Velvet Café has just turned one. Go wish her a happy birthday!
Final word...

What I'm watching tonight...
A bit of a mixed bag, but I wanted to catch everything before the holidays start. I FINALLY GET TO SEE SHAME! Yay! It is going to be strange, because I've been going on about this movie for so long and only now do I get to see it. I'm also unfortunately going to be checking out Jack and Jill, because our shop got 21 copies of it and only one copy of The Artist so therefore Jack and Jill must be a masterpiece. Also, I'll check out Happy Feet Two because I loved the first one. This is one of the first three movie nights I've had on a school night in a long time - but I feel I deserve it (no matter how crappy the films are).
Video of the week...
I'M. SO. EXCITED. (seriously, I've got to the 'I'm having a heart attack every time I hear the words The Dark Knight Rises' stage).
Podcast plug...
Since there were a few people who watched my LAMMY 2012 video and said my accent was 'adorable', I think they'd be interested in listening to Ryan McNeil and I chat about Brave. It was 11pm when we started where I was, and 7am where he was. We were both a bit out of it, but it was a fun discussion all the same!
Change in schedule...
Thanks to some issues surrounding my next French New Wave film, I've decided to postpone my final post until Thursday. That means I'll bring my 'conversation' with Jack and Jill up to tomorrow. Then on Friday you will have a review of Shame up for your reading pleasure.
Links...
Nikhat looks at her ten favourite female Pixar characters. That is a place filled with magic.
Joining the 'film facts about me' train this week were Andy, Sam, Brittani, and James.
Anna reviews the totally awesome Alien. Speaking of, I have the sequel at my house and will be watching it sometime this week.
I don't watch much TV, but Sati makes me wish that I did with the first part to her 20 favourite TV characters.
Tyler lists the ten films he hopes are never remade by Hollywood. And hopefully they never are.
Finally, here's come great reviews of the fantastic Brave, which I'm liking more and more every second:
-The Matinee
-Anomalous Material
-The Film Emporium
-Being Norma Jeane
-Surrender to the Void
-FlixChatter

What I'm watching tonight...
Yeah, just One for the Money. Since it is the only thing (besides The Walking Dead season two, which I really need to catch up on) out on DVD this week. It's a good thing that I only have this to watch tonight, since I have to practise my speech (I'm unbelievably stressed about this because besides writing, public speaking is my next best 'thing'), do a whole lot of other English work and finish off the writing for my Drama assessment. So yes, Katherine Heigl will be a welcome break. On the bright side, only a week until I can see Shame!
Video of the week...
I'm just gonna use this to plug all the fantastic videos that are going up for the LAMMYs this year. I'll be announcing Most Prolific - just gotta make sure my video works, first!
Links...
A whole lotta people have taken inspiration from me and have listed their own film facts. Here they are:
-Cinematic Corner
-"...let's be splendid about this..."
-Being Norma Jeane
-And So It Begins...
-Southern Vision
-Whoa, This Is Heavy!
-Ramble Film
Andy Buckle has just finished up at the Sydney Film Festival and he has this round-up of his fantastic coverage. Sounds like he had a (tiring) blast!
Mette reviews the brilliant Lost in Translation.
It seems that Anna was floored by the brilliant The Double Life of Veronique.
Reel Insight has a celebratory episode for their second anniversary. Awesome stuff!
Tyler, who was inspired by my sudden personal piece on Saturday night, writes about how he takes comfort in film and finds inspiration.
Diana reviews my beloved Schindler's List, and it seems she loved it *almost* as much as me (that's coz no-one can love it as much as me).
The Void checked out the severely underrated Another Earth.
Final word...
Most underrated film from last year?

What I'm watching tonight...
These past two weeks have been filled with movies that I've been wanting to see. I rewatched Moneyball last night (which I loved even more the second time around) and gave 30 Minutes or Less a go. Tonight, I'm watching The Vow and finally The Ides of March. However, next week won't be the same. I literally only have Katherine Heigl's One for the Money to watch. Fun.
Video of the week...
What else do you expect me to put here? The Django Unchained 'teaser' came out last week and it was pretty damn awesome. I wish it had more Leo, though. I piss myself laughing every time I see that zoom in on his face.
Podcast plug...
If you haven't listened to the Demented Podcast's Battle Royale yet, what's wrong with you? It's been weeks in the making (scheduling difficulties), and it was a pretty fun way to end a week filled with exams. And you'll have to see who is victorious out of me, Kai, Rachel, Jandy and Jason.

Andy is currently living it up at this year's Sydney Film Festival. Check out the amazing (and oh so prolific) coverage over at his site.
Wanna get involved in something cool, and consider yourself a bit of a Francophile? Check out Lesya's Paris in Genres, and recommend your favourite Parisian set film!
Mette offers a brilliant list of her favourite coming of age films.
Bonjour Tristesse has a review of one of my most anticipated films of the year, Cosmopolis.
The response to the LAMB's Foreign Chops all about French New Wave was quite impressive, and definitely gave me a lot to build on for the rest of the month.
The Kid in the Front Row has some lovely things to say about blogging. I wish I could better enforce the 'take a break' advice!
Sati has another 'Visual Parallels' post, this time looking at the similarities between Amelie and The Artist.
Taking some inspiration from me, Tyler shares his 50 film facts about himself.
Over at Front Room Cinema Tom looks at the career of the brilliant Richard Linklater. And here I can politely mention that a certain Christian McKay was great in his underrated film Me and Orson Welles.
Final word...

Tuesday Links and Other Stuff #26
What I'm watching tonight...
See, here's the thing: there are four movies coming out this week that I really want to see (Chronicle, Safe House, Albert Nobbs, Our Idiot Brother). This would have been great any other week because a) Monday wouldn't have been a public holiday so most of those DVDs would have arrived a day early, meaning I could have watched some of them last night as well as tonight and b) I have to go to the auditions for 'Little Shop of Horrors' tonight, since I'm co-directing that (eeeeee!). Thank goodness, though, that I have study leave (and so few actual exams), so I can watch some of them tomorrow, too. So I'll choose what I'm watching tonight depending on the time.
Video of the week...
Oh, this Les Miserables trailer is lovely. Brings back memories of when I did makeup for our town version of it. Anne Hathaway's singing is heart breaking. Let's just say, I'm way more excited for it now!
LAMMY plug...
Lammy voting has opened, and while I'm pretty sure most of you have already voted, if you haven't, consider this 16 year old girl from New Zealand. Because you know you want to.
A bit of randomness...
I might do another post showcasing my photos in the future, but here's one particular photo that I took while I was away that I really want to share. I think it's cool.
Links...
Whoa, This is Heavy has a fantastic list of the 15 best female villains.
Tyler, master of all lists, has come up with the 100 best films of the 70s. Geez, I probably haven't even seen ten films from the 70s.
Scott has the top apps for movie lovers. The only thing that's missing is MovieCat. Best. Trivia. App. Ever.
During the weekend it was Ryan's birthday, and a few days earlier he had a special birthday ep of The Matineecast for us. He shares some great sites - one of which was mine.
Nikhat asks the question that every girl around our age ponders over: The Critical Eye vs. Eye Candy?
Andy has recently passed 1000 posts (come on guys, he deserves the 'Most Prolific' award), but for post 999, he has a review of Prometheus up. I'm not excited for the movie at all (and I'll be one of the few who will wait for the DVD), but some of you may be interested.
Fogs has been getting right into the LAMMY spirit by picking apart the categories he is nominated in. He's nominated in 8 categories - that's extremely impressive!
Mette has a wonderful list of her favourite actresses - lots of Bollywood mixed in with lots of Hollywood. I like it.
Sati looks at the evolution of Snow White on screen. Which reminds me, I really need to catch up on Once Upon a Time (this is why I don't watch TV shows).
And since everyone's probably high on Prometheus (or high on the disappointment of Prometheus from what I've been hearing), here's another review from the awesome Lesya.
Final word...
