I knew that because the movie is obviously about movies, that a lot of critics would love it but seeing it impartially as the family film it is marketed to be, this is just too uneven and poorly paced to be truly memorable. It's a good movie, don't get me wrong but I'm surprised by all the acclaim it's been getting.Castorhttp://www.anomalousmaterial.com/movies/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2587775651487578742.post-51697272950875568192012-01-22T20:36:14.980+13:002012-01-22T20:36:14.980+13:00Her performance was wonderful - one of my favourit...Her performance was wonderful - one of my favourites of the year. I think Helen McCrory is very good here, she often got overlooked but it's a noteworthy performance. This movie is in my top 10 of the year, Stevee, glad you enjoyed it.ruthhttp://flixchatter.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2587775651487578742.post-14879086572654945262012-01-21T01:50:23.033+13:002012-01-21T01:50:23.033+13:00A child behind me when I saw it was like 'Wow!...A child behind me when I saw it was like 'Wow! Look at how close everything is!!!' I guess the 3D was a success then? haha
Great review Stevee :) Melies is such an amazing figure in cinema history. I adore Trip to the Moon, and Kingsley's portrayal was the best thing in this film for me :) Asa was great too, but Kingsley moved me the most. I didn't out and out cry, but maybe like you a few tears of happiness welled up in the second half. I think all the hype left me a little disappointed, but I love the film more on reflection!
Phew, sorry for the long comment!Ruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00175638828147935702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2587775651487578742.post-74486026477108285312012-01-21T01:48:37.220+13:002012-01-21T01:48:37.220+13:00"as it is marketed and trying so hard to be.&..."as it is marketed and trying so hard to be."

I don't know, I think the studio is being less that wise with marketing this specifically as a children's film, but I don't think the film itself making any attempts to be one. It's a film I want to revisit soon, but other than the focus on the young protagonist and not the jaded man immediately it's a standard Scorsese about someone and their obsessions.

Glad you point out that particular scene in the final paragraph, McRory is so wonderful.Andrew K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/01104647944747041277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2587775651487578742.post-60861109284355419102012-01-21T01:38:45.536+13:002012-01-21T01:38:45.536+13:00I agree almost completely with you. Even I thought first half was tad too much but by the end, I was completely mesmerized despite the fact that I had no interest in watching it and I hate 3D. I have to give Kudos to Hugo for that. I cried at that part too, and in the birth of cinema scene, and a great many other times, and it really was out of joy and a bit out of sadness because it just resonates so much with my whole idea that life is always better in films.Nikhathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10379713171889712078noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2587775651487578742.post-33211253228471193262012-01-20T22:24:08.229+13:002012-01-20T22:24:08.229+13:00The fact that Georges Méliès is a character in thi...The fact that Georges Méliès is a character in this is enough to make me want to see it.
